The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

$10K Chicago
Metagame Staff

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner!

Michael Jacob is one of those guys who always seems to be at or near the top tables, but didn’t have that one breakthrough performance to put at the top of that resume. Two $10K Top 8 finishes and two PC money finishes—but he never had the brass ring, until now.

Jacob, piloting his pet Mutant Nation deck full of Jean Grey, Wolverine, Quicksilver, and Longshot dsetroyed all comers this weekend, following his first place finish in the Swiss rounds with a clean run through Sunday play. First it was fellow $10K champion Tim Batow’s Rigged Elections deck. Then it was Curve Sentinel superstar Dave Spears. Finally, in the final, he overcame a terrible game 1 draw to beat Kyle Dembinski to take home the cash, the trophy and the glory.

Now, Jacob and his Pro Circuit cronies turn their eyes across the ocean to a small European burg called Amsterdam; there, the world’s finest will gather to crown a champion and play for a $40,000 first prize. Will Jacob be able to follow this weekend’s performance up with more success on a larger stage? We’ll start getting you the answers Friday. For now though, it’s time to celebrate, as Michael Jacob is the $10K Chicago champion!

Day 2
This one started with Jacob exclaiming, “You’re a champion!” when Kyle produced the crucial Roy Harper ◊ Speedy on turn 1.
Smilin’ Dave Spears is a veteran’s veteran: he plays, builds, writes, and loves the game. Michael Jacob is a fellow $10K Top 8 finisher who’s finished higher up in the standings on a consistent basis. Their pitting of Curve Sentinels against Mutant Nation should be explosive.
Kyle is from Kansas City, Kansas and Mike is from Gurnee, Illinois. Kyle is playing the venerable Teen Titans, and Mike is playing the veteran New Brotherhood deck, which has regained some popularity since $10K Los Angeles.
They’re both old school. They’re both loud, charismatic, funny, intelligent, and experienced. What more could you ask for? Titans vs. Sentinels, that's what.
Mike is from Gurnee, Illinois and Tim is from Tulsa, Oklahoma. In the first game, Mike won the roll and elected to take the odd initiative.

The top three tables featured matches whose winners would virtually be assured a Top 8 finish. Here’s how they went . . .
We’re getting down to the nitty gritty here in Chicago as round 7 comes to a close. The Top 8 is starting to take shape . . .
As far as strategy games go, Vs. System is about as tough as they come. With the resource row effectively serving as a second hand, the number of interactions between unseen cards is far greater . . .
With nine undefeated players left at the tournament’s half-way mark, the top four tables were the only ones certain to produce undefeated players.
We’re halfway through the tournament in the town that Al Capone, Wrigley Field, and deep dish pizza call home . . .
Just a few snippets from the day’s early hours . . .
One truly beautiful aspect of the deck is the cost. Made mostly of commons and uncommons . . .
The warm-up’s unusual metagame led to a great deal of speculation among the players regarding what sort of decks would show up today.
With Amsterdam looming, many players are looking at this tournament as a tune-up.
