The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

$10K San Francisco
Metagame Staff

It’s been a long time coming. After six $10K Top 8s and over a year of continued success with Teen Titans, Josh Wiitanen finally has a trophy for his mantle. As he is considered by many to be both one of the best Teen Titans players and the best $10K players, this win might be seen as an inevitability, but that shouldn’t diminish his accomplishment.

Besides Josh’s victory, the other big story out of this event was the changing Golden Age Metagame. Both rag-tag Anti-Green Lantern builds and rogue control decks joined Teen Titans at the top of the standings. This is the last major Golden Age event for a while, so it will be interesting to see how the metagame shifts during the interlude. Right this minute, pros everywhere are turning their focus to X-Men, Modern Age, and PC Atlanta . . . where you can expect to see many of the same faces and teams that dominated this tournament. Congratulations again to Josh Wiitanen, $10K San Francisco Champion!

Day Two
This final match of the tournament pits two nearly-identical Teen Titans against each other for all the marbles. Josh has posted some notoriously poor performances on Sunday, and a number of people take it for granted that in any given $10K, he’ll make Top 8 but not take home the trophy.
These players have a dozen Top 8 finishes between them, in stark contrast to the relative unknowns in the other semifinal matchup. Josh is playing Titans, while Patrick is playing the Top 8’s lone GLOCK deck.
“You’re in trouble, buddy,” said Josh. “I have the advantage of experience, and I have the home field advantage—we’re in San Francisco.”

As the day came to a close, I asked a number of people what decks they thought I should share with you, the Metagame.com readership. These three decks were named more than any other.
These players sit at the third table as we enter the second-to-last round of Saturday competition. Ian is 7-1, while Brian is 6-2. A win in this round would go a long way towards assuring a Top 8 berth for either of these California natives.
Vidi won his first round feature match, and has only lost a single match since then. Bulk, winner of the last domestic $10K in Los Angeles, has somehow flown under the feature match radar all day today.
Without further ado, here it is.
As of round 7, there are two undefeated players left in this tournament: these two. The winner of this match becomes the only undefeated player in the tournament, and is almost guaranteed to make the Top 8.
Brian and Paul are good friends from nearby Berkley, California. Today, they sit undefeated at the first table of the tournament.
Robert is from the nearby town of San Jose, while Alex hails from Simi Valley in Southern California. Neither of these players has had a great deal of success in professional Vs., but as they’re both 4-0 going into this round, they’re poised for good finishes today.
Both Patrick and Brandon are undefeated as they enter the fourth round.
Brian Eugenio has thus far piloted his unique Doom Society deck to a 2-1 record, and his chances at making an appearance in Top 8 seem good.
These players are friends from San Jose. Both have prior $10K experience, but only Brian has a Top 8 finish to his name.
Daniella is a $10K fixture from Southern California who has enjoyed a degree of success on the Championship circuit. Brian is a local player from San Jose, and this is his first $10K tournament.
We just watched Niles crash and burn in a first feature match, but his deck was quite intriguing nonetheless. I sat down with Niles to talk about his weapon of choice.
Some people have all the luck. Not these two, though. In a sea of unknown and inexperienced players, these professional players have been paired against each other in the very first round.
