The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Quality Check on a Broken Deck
Julia Birks

No, we're not talking about Brisbane player Ben Quemard's mashed-up old deck, which he and his housemates unknowingly backed their cars over for weeks before realizing they were slowly destroying 4 Enemy of My Enemy . . . True story . . .

We're actually talking about those wacky guys from The Four Horsemen! One of the few concrete teams in Vs. System Oceania, TFH have been in a frenzy of deckbuilding in the lead-up to the Melbourne $10K and Pro Circuit event that takes place next month. Their frenzy has been compounded ten-fold by the fact that one of the broken decks they discovered has been devastated by bannings and errata.

Today, I’ve rustled up TFH members: Kakarot Turker, who hails from Adelaide, and Shaun Hayward, who is with us from across the Tasman (that's New Zealand, kids). Both have built wildly successful decks in the past, Kakarot staking claim to the colossal Ten Teams deck, and Shaun being the mastermind behind Good Guys, GLEE, and High Voltage. Both have excellent $10K successes to their names. Both are heading over to PC Los Angeles in November.

I pulled them aside to talk bannings, errata, and the nature of Pro-Circuit play.

The first thing I want . . . is names. Give me names. Err, a deck name, that is. What was your broken deck called?

Kakarot: We called the deck LoLoids. It was actually named from an MSN typo.

So, for the readers at home who are out of the loop (pun very much intended), can you briefly tell us how the deck worked?

K: It aims to win via obscene life gain, and massive endurance burn. It also has infinite attack dudes. The key cards were Mr. Fantastic, Stretch, Moloids, Decoy Program, Gone But Not Forgotten, any random Team-Up . . .

Shaun: There's other stuff in there that makes it go off, but they were the key cards.

So guys — how the heck do you find these combos? Is it your intimate knowledge of Vs. and its thousands upon thousands of cards? Sheer luck? Divine intervention? How does a man maketh a broken deck?

S: Kakarot found that one. It was just after the pre-release. A lot of people found the exploit, and I guess it just seemed pretty obvious to us also.

Considering that a lot of other teams, primarily those based out of the US, had also stumbled across these broken combos also, do you think that the bannings have prevented what might have otherwise been a very boring, very broken PC? Or are you all for a fiesta of broken gameplay?

K: I don't think it would have been that broken.

S: People would just play hate for it.

K: Golden is all about pairings anyway.

S: It's not about the pairings! Just play a good deck that beats stuff.

K: *hits Hayward*

So what now? How have you guys bounced back?

S:  I had an idea for a different deck right from the start of MHG (Marvel Heralds of Galactus).

K:  We usually have lots of decks floating around that are options for us that we’re developing.

S:  The name of our new deck that we're playing today is really good — More Good Guys. Woot!

Are you confident about how TFH will perform in LA? What process have you undertaken to prepare yourselves for the physical and mental demands of the PC?

S:  I usually end up changing my sleeping habits before a PC.

K:  Eating food can't be that bad, either.

What will be your greatest challenge in LA?

S:  Easy. Not getting too lost while we're traveling over there.

K:  Finding a Native American casino, because I'm not 21.

ED:  Aw.

K:  Getting good pairings on day 1 is always a bonus.

S:  That's not a challenge! Not scrubbing out in Round 1 should be my challenge! I always seem to scrub in the first round . . . *sighs*.

K:  Making day 2 is what I'm after. I'll be really disappointed if I don't make day 2. And then draft is the real challenge from there on, I guess.

What about this weekend? Should we expect to see great things from TFH in Silver Age mode?

K: We haven't actually tested that much for today, because of uni and other commitments.

S:  But uni's finished now, so we should be going testing-crazy from now on.

K: Don't you mean test-o-rama?

S:  Err . . . sure . . .

K:  We’re playing a Kree build. It's got a lot of one-of characters. Human Torch, The Invisible Man, Hawkeye, Kang, Kang Cobra, and San used with Lockjaw.

Who do you think is going to take home the trophy on Sunday?

K: Not AJ (Alex Antonios)! I can't believe he actually made it here!

S: I want to take home trophy number three today, although . . . Kakarot needs one now . . .

Any famous last words?

K:  Live Kree . . . Or DIE! Oh . . . oh, no that sucks! Lune-attic Legion (The Lunatic Legion). I haven't been able to pronounce that card properly ever.

S:  If you're going to play the game . . . learn to play it right. And Enchante (fellow TFHer) wants me to say: Air Hostesses 4-Life.

Well, thanks for the chat guys. Best of luck today, and in PCLA in November. We’re looking forward to seeing how our Oceanic exports shape up.
