The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Interview: Luke Bartter
Enchante Chang

Luke Bartter is, in this writer’s honest opinion, the best player in Australia. Luke has racked up four huge results in four huge tournaments—fourth at $10K Sydney, twenty-ninth at PC: LA, second at $10K Melbourne, and twenty-third at PC: Amsterdam. Also known online as “Like,” he is friendly and playful . . . even if his face looks concerned or serious most of the time.

How does it feel traveling across the Tasman for this $10K event?
It feels just like traveling in Australia, except I can’t drive. It’s like going to Melbourne, it’s so close. I’ve never been to New Zealand before, so it was good. Did I say I like to drive?

This event is Sealed Pack—was that a reason which made you come?
I would rather play constructed, even if the upcoming $10Ks in Australia are constructed, but I play when I can.

After three months of Marvel Knights, what’s the best draft strategy?
Draft Crime and Punishment highly, but it pays to be flexible. If I would force something, I would force Crime Lords. 5-drops such as Zarathos and The Russian are also great.

Sealed Pack is completely different from Booster Draft, so what types of cards do you want to open? What single card do you want to open?
I want to open 3x Crime and Punishment and one of each of the team-ups, especially Hypnotic Charms.

Why Charms?
Because you only need one team in Underworld. Midnight Sons is also really good, but Marvel Knights is drafted way too much.

Why is Vs. appealing to you?
I am a huge comic fan. This game has great flavor. I’ve played heaps of TCGs before, and they either died out or I lost interest. Vs. meets my every criterion for a TCG, and that’s why I play it.

What comics do you read?

X-titles, Ironman, Spiderman, Fantastic Four, and Punisher.

Who’s your favorite super hero or villain? What character hasn’t been printed that you would like to see printed?
The Mad Thinker (villain) is my favorite. He appeared in the Fantastic Four comics, always thinking he would win because he could out-think anyone else, but he always lost. I also like Bullseye and Sabretooth. I would like to see Hulk’s nemesis, Abomination, printed.

Do you pretend to be the super hero or villain when you play? Do you make gestures and sound effects when you play plot twists and power-ups?
No. I just want to win. I make a sad sound when I don’t draw anything, but I don’t like to gloat over someone when I beat him or her. Play fair.

To what do you attribute your Vs. success?
Good times with my mates, it encourages you to play more.

Is it your circle of friends that keeps you in the game? How much time do you spend on Vs. a week?
Yes. The game is good, but no friends equals no play for Luke.

It seems like you are always the bridesmaid and never the bride at tournaments. How does that make you feel? Does it inspire you?

I know I can do better—if I do better than the last time, I really don’t care otherwise. I just want to improve.

Is there any advice you want to hand out to the aspiring young players out there?
The game is hard to learn. If you apply the time, you can be good. If you make an effort, it will show—and I’m not being arrogant.

Last words of wisdom from Luke:
This game is good, people should take a chance and play. If I can do it, anyone can.
