The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 7: Scott "Yoda" Hunstad vs. Dane “The Lacerater” Lawrence
Kieren Otton

Scott Hunstad, guru of all things Games and co-owner of Good Games in Sydney takes on the might of Dane Lawrence's Kang deck. Kang has been tearing up the tables today, and Yoda is out to put the purple fella in the bin. Dane wins the toss and takes odds

Turn 1

Both players keep their opening hands. Dane lays a resource and passes.

Yoda slips in a low blow with Paul Ebersol ◊ Fixer, Problem Solver for 2.

Scott: 50

Dane: 48

Turn 2

Yoda drops Dallas Riordan, Mayoral Aide and Joystick, both in the visible area. The Lacerater drops Kang, One of Many, exhausting Joystick. Paul bashes Kang, Dane has a power-up, and Yoda flips Battleworld to pump Paul by 1. Dane grabs a Slaughter Swamp bringing Kang back and powers-up again. Yoda has had enough, and plays Trial by Fire on The Fixer and Kang carks it.

Scott: 49

Dane: 43

Turn 3

Dane takes initiative, flipping a Psyche-Globe, grabbing Kang, Kang Ransom. He goes into the think tank — for the first time today — and passes. Yoda drops Melissa Gold ◊ Songbird, Sonic Carapace, then uses Birthing Chamber and forms up. Kang Ransom then exhausts to replace the Chamber.

Yoda uses the Golden Girl to bash Many Kang. The Lacerater takes the beats and goes to 37. Yoda then bashes with Joystick and Paul Ebersol for 5, and Dane goes to 32

Scott: 49

Dane: 32

Turn 4

Yoda exhausts Dallas to draw a card. He plays Dr. Light, Master of Holograms, then Nenora, and passes. Dane drops Kang, Rama Tut in the hidden area, exhausting him to play Game of the Galaxy, wins the game, and grabs Kang, One of Many. He plays Many Kang, revealing another Kang, and removes him from the game and searches for another card and keeps it secret, keeps it safe. He passes with 1 resource going begging.

Yoda plays Faces of Evil and sends Dr. Light into Kang, One of Many. This is the first time today I've seen the Doctor do a fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay. Dane uses his reveal text to exhaust Miss Gold, and Kang, One of Many stuns. Dane flips Kang Kross-roads, pumping Kang Ransom. Everybody remaining bashes Kang Ransom, but Dane has 2 power-ups. Yoda Battleworlds for another pump, but Dane pumps again! Yoda swallows, then powers up Joystick, giving her an extra 2 ATK, and, finally, Dane concedes the battle and passes. Nenora rubs salt into Dane’s wounds and swings for 2. Dane then pulls a rabbit out of a hat and plays the much-maligned Avengers Disassembled. Yoda stuns Melissa Gold and The Fixer. Dane keeps Kang and takes initiative into turn 5.

Scott: 45

Dane: 24

Turn 5

Dane uses Slaughter Swamp to ditch Kang, One of Many to bring Kang, Ultimate Kang back, and then drops the big fella, with both in the back. Yoda draws with Dallas, then uses Dr. Light to bring Melissa Gold back, and plays Frankie Raye ◊ Nova, Optimistic Youth for 1. He makes Birthing Chamber happen, pitching an Enemy of My Enemy, flips his own Swamp, throws a Flying Kick to grab Paul Ebersol, and then plays him and plants everyone to the back except Light and Dallas. He prepares to receive.

Dane uses his new think tank membership, and decides thinking is over rated; he then adopts the scientific approach to combat resolution and swings Ultimate Kang into Melissa Gold. Yoda reinforces. Kang Ransom goes into Paul Ebersol, who is also reinforced, and both players pass.

Scott: 42

Dane: 24

Turn 6

Yoda had the look of a man who has a lottery ticket he thinks is a winner, but just can't remember where he put it. He uses the Chamber, dumping Hard Sound Construct. He then flips another Birthing Chamber, losing Kyle Rayner, Last Green Lantern this time. Dr. Light then gives Mister Rayner the kiss of life, and Yoda grabs another Hard Sound Construct with Rayner’s funky ability. He then plays Enemy, pitching Melissa Gold ◊ Screaming Mimi, Mimi Schwartz grabbing Fatality, Emerald Assassin. He then plays the nasty chick, uses Hard Sound Construct for the Screamer, then uses Enemy again, pitching Mikado and Mosha for a Yellowjacket, Rita DeMara. She pops out boosted which allows The Muppet to grab Klaw (foil no less), who gets played straight away. With the last resource point, Yoda pays 1 to Mimi who gives Dane an earful of anti-loving, burning him for 11.

Dane is a little asleep waiting for his recruit, but when he wakes, he plays Slaughter Swamp trying for Tempus, Menace out of Time. Fatality KOs something to stop it, leaving Dane empty. He does drop Kang, Kang Ransom in the hidden area and assumes the position.

Joystick and Frankie slam into Ultimate Kang, with Faces and The Wrecking Crew making it tough to beat. Ultimate Kang goes down, and takes Joystick with him. The Lacerater exhausts Klaw in reprisal.

Kyle and Yellowjacket swing into Kang Ransom, with Ransom and Kyle crashing. A team attack from everyone else into Dane’s head seals the deal, and Yoda's Faces of Evil deck stands triumphant! A pity it didn't quite compete with Arkham Curve at PC LA 2005 . . .

A top game, with both guys playing well.
