The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 5: Jason Dawson vs. Steve Horowitz
Jason Grabher-Meyer

Dave Humphreys swung by at the beginning of the match to inform the competitors of their two-minute time extension. “Aw, I won't be able to stall out my TNB opponent.” Dawson grinned, shaking his fist in the air. “Damn you!”

Neither player had a 1-drop but both hit their 2-drops: Horowitz recruited Scarlet Witch, Eldritch Enchantress while Dawson nailed Hounds of Ahab. He was pinged by the Witch, who gained +2 from the game's first The New Brotherhood. Next turn, he recruited a Mark II to Horowitz's Rogue, Anna Raven and forced trades on all four characters on the board. Each man kept his 3-drop.

Horowitz continued to curve, recruiting Sabretooth, Feral Rage and discarding a copy of Thornn after considering discarding Phantazia instead, a choice likely made for the sake of versatility. Dawson continued curving, as well, and recruited a Sentinel Mark V, using it to protect the Mark II. Horowitz took a moment to think carefully, and then decided it was his time to trade. Sabretooth smacked the Mark V while Rogue took down the Mark II, leaving nothing but a Mark V and Sabretooth on the field.

Again, Dawson nailed his curve with complete ease, recruiting Nimrod and giving it his counter. Horowitz recruited Magneto, Eric Lehnsherr, placed both characters in the back, and braced for the attack. The Mark V again traded with Sabretooth, and Nimrod lost his counter to stun Magneto, ending in the KO'ing of Feral Rage. Next turn, however, Horowitz recruited a fresh one. As he debated his formation decision, Dawson notified him in a friendly way to watch his cards. “Watch your fan [of cards], man. I've seen a Flying Kick, an Eldritch Enchantress, and a Magneto.” Dawson's just that much of an honest guy.

When the build phase came under his control, Dawson immediately recruited Bastion. “Hmm. No matter what I do, I think I lose,” mused Horowitz. Dawson moved his characters to the back to keep their damage ranges conservative, and when Sabretooth attacked Bastion, Dawson quickly made him larger than the offending card. Horowitz had a few combat bonuses, but it just wasn't enough to save the game for him, so he scooped.

Jason Dawson wins!
