We’re almost halfway through Day 1 here in good ole’ C-bus, and the field is paring itself down to a fine point.Twelve records remained unblemished heading into fifth round play, with two of the big boys—Leander and Walls—still hanging around. Here’s a look at what happened where.
Table 1: Anthony Calabrese vs. Alex Tennett
Calabrese is playing a very unusual F4/New gods deck. The gambit was apparently working, as he came into round 5 with a 4-0 record. Unfortunately, his undefeated streak came to an end when Tennett’s Brave and the Bold deck finished Anthony off on turn 7, with Garth ◊ Tempest and Mirage making the difference.
Table 2: Phillip Atkins vs. Dusty Hostetler
Hostetler’s Teen Titans took him to 5-0 this match with Roy Harper Arsenal, Sharpshooter and Press the Attack proving to be the bombs. Atkins, playing Curve Sentinels, dropped to 4-1.
Table 3: Michael Jacobs vs. Sean Postlethwaite
In an uneventful match, Postlethwaite, running Doom, missed his fourth, fifth and sixth turn plays, and the X-Men took their down arch-nemesis on turn 6.
Table 4: Roy St. Claire vs. Taylor Yeltan
Doom sent one player to the 5-0 bracket, with St. Claire’s Focused Blast ending a marathon match on turn 10. Taylor dropped to 4-1.
Table 5: David Bauer vs. Rob Leander.
In a match pitting two literal Floridian tourists against one another, Leander, who seems to be everyone’s favorite to win the tournament, finally suffered his first blemish as Bauer’s teched-out Curve Sentinels took down the Titans. Anarchy proved key, winning the match on turn 7.
Table 6: Kyle Montgomery vs. Gabe Walls
Walls won this one on turn 9 despite his best efforts. Playing Teen Titans, Gabe failed to recognize the synergy between Tim Drake and Red Star, giving Kyle an extra turn because turn 8 finished with each player at -4 endurance. Fortunately, Walls finally figured out how the combo worked—cursing as he did so—and rode it to victory.
