Vs. events have always been a haven for those of us who enjoy the . . . shall we say . . . geekier side of life. Let’s face it—gaming and comic books have long been branded as the territory of nerds, weirdos, and 13 year-old fanboys. Where can those of us who enjoy playing a game about comic books go to be accepted? The answer? Right here.
The San Diego Comic-Con is the largest comic book convention in the world, and if you needed any more convincing that this is the place to be for any comic book fan, then check out our photo coverage of the event. Whether it’s a phalanx of stormtroopers, dueling knights outside the tournament area, or our very own Andrew Yip as the Avatar, it is abundantly clear that this is a place where you can embrace your inner geek.
I talked to some of the players to see what they thought of having a major Vs. event at the Con. David Spears seemed most excited by the many impressive sights around the con. “There are a lot of good looking women around here.”
Ryan Jones commented that having Vs. events at a huge con like this “makes the tournament feel important. There are so many people around, and Upper Deck is a very large presence here. Not to mention the fact that the site is near San Diego’s Gaslamp District, which is a great place to go out after the event.”
Upper Deck Organized Play director Scott Elliot was happy to see so many comic book fans at the event. “Vs. has a great group of tournament players, but events like this help bring in comic book fans who may never have heard of Vs. before this weekend. It is a great opportunity to expand our player base, and it is a lot of fun for the players to see everything going on at the convention when they aren’t playing.”
Win or lose, everyone at this event has a chance to be a part of something that is unparalleled anywhere else in the world. We’ll keep you posted on all of the exciting action in the tournament and around the convention.
