Both players were at 7 wins, and this match was crucial for them to secure a spot in the Top 8.
Tze Hong won the die roll and wanted the even initiatives. Tong Wee chose to mulligan while Tze Hong kept his opening hand.
Turn 1: Tze Hong had Sue Dibny, who searched out Booster Gold. Endurance: Tze Hong 50, Tong Wee 49.
Turn 2: Tze Hong recruited Booster Gold and formed him behind the charismatic coordinator. Tong Wee boosted Copperhead into play. Booster Gold attacked for a double stun and cleared the way for Sue. Endurance: Tze Hong 48, Tong Wee 46.
Turn 3: Tong Wee recruited The Creeper and had both his characters in front. Tze Hong had The Mist and placed it beside the protected Booster Gold. Both of Tong Wee’s characters attacked down the curve. Copperhead stunned Sue and The Creeper ran Booster Gold over. Tze Hong declined the attack and kept Booster Gold. Endurance: Tze Hong 43, Tong Wee 42.
Turn 4: On Tze Hong’s board, Batman, Hidden Crusader hit play in the hidden area, and Booster Gold was protected. Tong Wee brought John Stewart, Emerald Architect out as the focal point of an “L” formation with The Creeper protecting. Tze Hong proposed The Mist on Copperhead, and the slithery assassin evaded. Booster Gold then attacked The Creeper and Tong Wee flipped Poisoned!. However, Tze Hong managed to counter that with Plasma Blast. The Creeper evaded. Finally, Batman attacked John Stewart with support from another Plasma Blast. Endurance: Tze Hong 43, Tong Wee 23.
Turn 5: Tong Wee recruited Scarecrow, Fearmonger and formed in “T” with The Creeper protecting John Stewart and the other two characters flanking Creeper. Tze Hong recruited Crystal Frost ◊ Killer Frost, equipped with Nth Metal. He formed in an “L” with Crystal Frost protected by The Mist.
At the beginning of the combat phase, Scarecrow moved Copperhead’s counter onto himself. John Stewart attacked The Mist. Tze Hong exhausted it to pay for Mysterious Benefactor, which was used to search out Batman, Hidden Crusader. Tong Wee chose to move John Stewart into the hidden area to satisfy The Mist’s effect. Next, Scarecrow and The Creeper team attacked Crystal Frost. Tze Hong flipped Counterstrike to stun Scarecrow, and played Rallying Cry! on Batman. This added a third card to his KO’d pile for payment of Crystal Frost’s ally ability. Tze Hong chose Scarecrow as the target of the freeze. Finally, Copperhead attacked Booster Gold for a double stun. Given the initiative, Tze Hong had Batman attack Creeper. Tze Hong recovered Crystal Frost and Tong Wee recovered Scarecrow. Endurance: Tze Hong 30, Tong Wee 7.
Turn 6: Tze Hong played Ocean Master and formed him behind Crystal Frost, while Tong Wee recruited Remoni-Notra ◊ Star Sapphire, Zamoran Champion and placed her behind the exhausted Scarecrow. In combat, Scarecrow moved a counter from Crystal Frost onto himself. Tze Hong didn’t draw his team-up, and had to pass his attack. Remoni-Notra attacked Crystal Frost and Tze Hong discarded two cards to Ocean Master’s ability to put a +1 ATK/+1 DEF counter on him. With three cards in the KO’d pile, Tze Hong was able to use Crystal Frost to prevent Remoni-Notra from readying that turn. There were no further attacks. Endurance: Tze Hong 25, Tong Wee 7.
Turn 7: Tong Wee had Mark Desmond ◊ Blockbuster and formed in an inverted “L” with Scarecrow protecting Remoni-Notra and Mark Desmond beside Scarecrow. Tze Hong recruited Guy Gardner, Egomaniac, and he formed in an “L” with Crystal Frost protecting Guy Gardner. Scarecrow tried to steal Ocean Master’s counter, but Tze Hong flipped and activated Sinister Citadel and to move it to Crystal Frost instead. Denied, Scarecrow attacked Crystal Frost and stunned her. Mark Desmond attacked Ocean Master, and Tong Wee flipped and activated Gorilla City for +1 ATK. When Tong Wee passed the initiative, Tze Hong called his bluff and ran Guy Gardner into Scarecrow for the win.
He later explained that he did not go for the safer play of team attacking Mark Desmond, as he was afraid Tong Wee might have a Roll Call! which would have brought the game to turn 8. |
