The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Semifinals: Sammy Gilly vs. Ben Stoll
Toby Wachter

Sammy Gilly took yesterday by storm, finishing in first seed with his Common Enemy, Dr. Doom/Fantastic Four deck. Unlike the other three pure Fantastic Four builds in the Top 8 that aim to hit the perfect curve and dominate the board with multiple Fantasticars, Gilly’s deck is based more around utility and efficiency. He clearly has momentum on his side, but it’ll be interesting to see how he fares against Stoll’s more traditional FF strategy.

Game 1

Gilly opened with Boris, attacking for one. She-Thing came out on turn two, and Stoll still had nothing. The curve continued with a third-turn Darkoth, while Stoll played Thing, Ben Grimm. Turn four let Stoll play Invisible Woman, Sue Storm, and Gilly played Dr. Doom, Diabolic Genius, but not before using Signal Flare to get Thing, Heavy Hitter. By the time turn five rolled around, Gilly had four characters to Stoll’s two. Gilly also flipped over Common Enemy, while Stoll tried to fend off the attacks as best he could. Hulk came out on turn six, and Gilly answered back with Signal Flare to get Dr. Doom, Victor von Doom, and put him into play. At this point in the game, Stoll had stabilized enough to put up a fight, although Gilly kept the development going with Boris and a Hulk of his own. Stoll played Thing, The Ever-Lovin’ Blue-Eyed Thing, which shifted things significantly. Now it was Gilly who had to go on the defensive, using Mystical Paralysis to hold back Thing. With the help of It’s Clobberin’ Time, Stoll’s attack stunned Gilly’s Doom and Hulk. At this point, the board was lopsided enough to convince him to concede.

Game 2

Once again, Gilly had a first-turn Boris. Stoll played She-Thing, and Gilly answered with She-Hulk. Signal Flare helped out Stoll’s curve by searching out Thing, Ben Grimm, which came right into play. Gilly played Dr. Doom, Diabolic Genius, and Stoll had Invisible Woman, Sue Storm. Mystical Paralysis and Reign of Terror helped Gilly slow things down for a turn, and he played Darkoth on turn five. Stoll had Mr. Fantastic, Stretch, who took a Fantasticar while Twin Firearms went to She-Hulk. Dr. Doom attacked Invisible Woman, and Boris searched out Savage Beatdowm to help out the attack. Savage Beatdown and Overload helped stun Doom, and Gilly was now on the ropes. A second Overload dealt with Darkoth, and Gilly conceded on Stoll’s attack.
