I can’t talk enough about this man, Scott Hunstad. He recently came in fourth at PC: Amsterdam and sixteenth at $10K Melbourne. Australia has the second largest Vs. community in the world, and if people didn’t know about them before, Scott and a few other Australians definitely made their mark at PC: Amsterdam. Scott Hunstad is also the owner of the Vs. System community website, VSParadise.
You own a website called VSParadise, which is very successful. How is it to own and run a website? A lot more work than I thought it would be . . . managing staff, getting columnists and editors—but it’s really fun, and I enjoy it.
You’ve had huge success in Amsterdam, and you are ranked fourth in Oceania. You are most likely the favorite here. How does that make you feel? Actually, it puts a bit more pressure on me. It is Sealed and I crack easily. I will be disappointed, however, if I do not make Top 20. Even though it is Sealed, I think it still takes skill to build a good deck—a good player shouldn’t go 0–3 tomorrow.
How does it feel traveling across the Tasman for this $10K event? Fantastic. A game as new as this and is viable across other countries is great. I’ve played other TCGs before, and this is the only one besides Magic to be viable.
This event is Sealed Pack—was that a reason that made you come? Yes and no. It was about money; if I didn’t do well at Amsterdam, I wasn’t coming.
After three months of Marvel Knights, what’s the best draft strategy? Crime Lords. ‘Nuff said, I guess.
Sealed Pack is completely different from Booster Draft, so what type of cards do you want to open? What single card do you want to open? Crime Lords, Crime and Punishment, team-ups, and Blown to Pieces are all great. If I could only pick one, though, it would be Marvel Team-Up.
Why is Vs. System appealing to you? I play other TCGs. When I lose in them, I don’t know why I lost—was it mana screw or what? In Vs., you can pinpoint the time it fell to pieces. It is easier to learn from your mistakes.
Who’s your favorite super hero or villain? What character hasn’t been printed that you would like to see printed? Sandman from the DC Vertigo comics. I would also like them to print him in Vs.
Do you pretend to be the super hero/villain when you play? Do you make gestures and sound effects when you play plot twists and power-ups? No. No. No. (shaking his head as the question was being asked)
To what do you attribute your Vs. success? Not practice. I have played a lot of TCGs before and drafted a lot before in other games. The skills are just carrying over to Vs.
Is it your circle of friends that keep you in the game? How much time do you spend on Vs. a week? Yes, we play all the time. If they stopped, I would too. I play about ten to twelve hours a week.
Is there any advice you’d like to hand out to the aspiring young players out there? Be persistent, because it takes a while to get good. Have fun at the beginning, and learn as you go along. You will be good if you try. |
