The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 9: David de Michele vs. Matthew Frankl
Anand Khare

David is from Tampa, Florida, and Matthew is from Dover, Delaware. These players have only one loss apiece and are very close to a guaranteed spot in the Top 8. David won the die roll and chose to take the odd initiatives.

David kept, and Matthew mulliganed. David began the game with a first-turn Electric Eve. Matthew had no play, and he missed on turn 2, as well. David, on the other hand, hit Melissa Gold ◊ Songbird, Sonic Carapace. He flipped Dr. Fate’s Tower, discarding Helm of Nabu to search for Cloak of Nabu. Melissa was equipped with the Cloak and a Helm. David drew and then discarded two cards. He attacked directly, and that was the turn. The endurance totals were 46-35, with David’s only endurance loss coming from two double-evasions.

David had the initiative on turn 3, and he played a Wild Ride to search for Black Panther, King of Wakanda. He recruited Black Panther in the concealed area. With his ability on the chain, David used Fate’s Tower to give Black Panther the Helm and Cloak. The 3-drop searched out Amulet of Nabu to complete the trifecta, and David passed. Matthew recruited Shayera Thal ◊ Hawkwoman with Nth Metal. David attacked Shayera with Black Panther, and Matthew discarded Flamethrower for another Nth Metal. He played Meltdown on Black Panther’s Amulet, then played Magnificent Seven from his resource row to power Shayera up again. Black Panther, now 5 ATK / 5 DEF, was brick-walled and stunned by the 7 ATK / 6 DEF Shayera. David tried again, this time sending Melissa in. Matthew used Shayera’s ally ability to get Katar Hol ◊ Hawkman, and the characters traded stuns. Electric Eve attacked directly, then evaded. In recovery, Melissa Gold was KO’d. The endurance totals were now 37-28 in David’s favor.

Turn 4 was Matthew’s initiative. He recruited Katar Hol in front of Shayera and equipped him with an Nth Metal. David played Enemy of My Enemy for Jester. In combat, Shayera went after Jester. Before the attack became legal, David transferred the Nth Metal on Shayera to Jester. Matthew played Magnificent Seven to power-up, and the characters traded stuns. Katar Hol attacked Electric Eve, and David evaded. The 4-drop attacked directly for 9, and that was the end of combat. Matthew had now gained an endurance lead of 24-19.

David played another Enemy of My Enemy on turn 5, this time picking up John Henry Irons ◊ Steel. He recruited the 5-drop, and then put a Mindtap Mechanism from his hand into play attached to it. He then flipped another copy of Dr. Fate’s Tower, yielding himself another Amulet. Black Panther received the Amulet, and David passed. Matthew played Booster Gold with boost, then flipped World’s Greatest Heroes to team-up JLA and JLI. He flipped and KO’d a Kooey Kooey Kooey to search for Crimson Fox, which he recruited with an Nth Metal. He set up with Crimson Fox in front of Shayera Thal and Booster Gold in front of Katar Hol, then passed. David paid 3 endurance to steal Katar Hol’s Nth Metal, attaching it to Electric Eve. John went after Katar Hol, and David passed. Matthew powered-up twice. David allowed the mutual stun. He sent Jester to run over Booster Gold, and then Black Panther went after Shayera Thal. David flipped another Meltdown to KO the Amulet once again, and the attack was rendered illegal. David was forced to pass, and Crimson Fox attacked Jester. Fox lost her counter, and Jester stunned. Finally, Shayera Thal attacked Electric Eve with help from Light Armor. This was more then enough to win the game for Matthew.
