The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 9: Patrick Yapjoco vs. David Bauer
Tim Willoughby

In the final round of $10K Atlanta’s Sealed Pack rounds, both Patrick Yapjoco and David Bauer are ready to draft; however they are hotly maneuvering for position at this point.

Pat won the roll and took evens. When he started out with a 1-drop in the form of Jubilee and got to attack to the face with her, he looked pretty good.

His start was well and truly trumped the following turn though when David had Amelia Voght for free and Chrome. Amelia got an Image Inducer, making her large enough to hold off any attacks from Pat’s Changeling, and the attacks back were brutal.

On turn 3, David continued to dominate, with Xorn and another Image Inducer for him. He attacked into Pat’s Sage, Xavier’s Secret Weapon with a smile, dominating the board, and taking Pat to 38, compared to his own 41.

For turn 4, Yapjoco tried to turn it around with Roberto Da Costa visible behind Sage. This time it was David’s turn to underdrop (as opposed to overdropping like he did on turn 2), with just Friedrich Von Roehm in the visible area. One of the Image Inducers got transferred to him, and he hid behind Chrome, while Xorn hid behind Amelia. All that hiding was no good for Xorn though, as he got hit by a Phase Shift from Yapjoco. Roberto then beat up Amelia, and after the pass, David had no attacks back.

At the start of turn 5, Bauer let out a little chuckle.

“Something good?”

“No, I’m just laughing at something else,” mumbled David as he plopped Polaris, Acolyte onto the table.

Patrick’s 5-drop was Marrow, who was soon exhausted by Chrome at the start of the attack step. Polaris then used her ability to send Bauer’s team to the air. Friedrich then swooped down on Roberto Da Costa, stunning the 4-drop, and leaving Sage unreinforceable. Planet X then teamed-up X-Men and Brotherhood.

Polaris attacked the now 10 ATK / 9 DEF Marrow, and David passed.

A little shake of the head came from Patrick, who evaded, looking likely to take a lot of endurance loss for the turn. Polaris had a crack at Sage, but could only do 3 endurance loss as X-Men United reinforced her.

David then attacked to the face, replacing Planet X to take Patrick to 15. Still on 29 himself, he had to feel pretty good at the point he passed.

Patrick played out Iceman, Deep Freeze on turn 6, and set up with Roberto at the apex of an L shape so his leader ability could take maximum effect.

Bauer, meanwhile, only had Wolverine, The Best At What He Does, who would be pretty straightforward for Yapjoco to stun with any of his characters.

Iceman attacked Wolverine, and thanks to the power-up from Roberto Da Costa, looked safe from stunback, even with Wolverine holding an Image Inducer. Unfortunately for Yapjoco though, there was a Pack Tactics waiting for the mutual stun, and a Xorn for the reinforcement. Down to just 9, if both of Yapjoco’s remaining characters got stunned on the turn, he would lose the game.

Roberto Da Costa attacked Xorn with Bum’s Rush, turning him into a 9 ATK / 7 DEF. This brought David down to 17, with just Marrow left to attack for Patrick.

She went for Chrome, and did the full breakthrough to take David to 7. Polaris then attacked back into Roberto Da Costa to make it the game.

Dave Bauer wins!
