The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

First Impressions of The Avengers

With the release of Avengers only a few weeks away, previews for the Avengers set have started to circulate. The first of these cards previewed was Captain America, Super Soldier. For reference:

I asked a few of the notable players in the room what their thoughts were on the card, and on the leader mechanic in general. Here’s what they had to say.

Adam Prosak: “I really like the idea of leader for Sealed, as long as there is a reasonable amount of flight and range in the set. Anything that makes formations matter more is good in my opinion, although in a set like Green Lantern it wouldn’t have been that interesting since everything has flight and range—it really wouldn’t effect your formations that much. As far as Captain America goes, he seems okay.”

Dave Spears: “I really like characters that have plot twists built into them, so I really like Captain America a lot. Plus, he is insane. His ability should be on a 7-drop, seriously. He is certainly better than Sinestro, which is already pretty good as far as 6-drops go.

Josh Wiitanen: “Making formations matter more is a good thing, as it rewards a good player. Captain America seems really versatile. He’s really good on both offense and defense. He could actually be really good with Sinestro, since they either have to go after Captain America first and trigger Sinestro, or they have to take down a 14 ATK/14 DEF Sinestro. Seems very good.”

Ryan Jones: “I don’t know what you want me to say here. He’s obviously very good. I’m glad they put the ability on a 6-drop, because you basically get one use out of the defensive effect and one use out of his offensive effect, since most games end on turn 7. Any sooner than that and it would just be stupid.”

It’s always good to see players debate how powerful a new card or mechanic. The fact there isn’t a consensus as to the power level of leader, or even Captain America specifically, means that he and all the other leaders in Avengers will require significant testing. Be sure to check out all the upcoming Avengers preview cards at Metagame.com, and head to a local Sneak Preview tournament for your earliest chance to get your hands on all the new, exciting Avengers cards.
