The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

$10K Los Angeles
Metagame Staff

The finals at Los Angeles have ended, and Jack Garrett is the latest $10K Champion! Piloting his Curve Sentinels deck to three consecutive wins made Jack the latest person to earn the title of $10K Champion.

Fellow finalist Josh Wiitanen earned himself a special place in the record books this weekend as he became the first person to play in four $10K Top 8 Championships. Despite not coming away from any of them with a win, Josh has firmly established himself as a force to be reckoned with on the $10K circuit.

The two players fought their way through two long and grueling games, splitting them down the middle, before engaging in an anti-climactic game three that Jack won handily.

Jack and Josh certainly have an interesting ride home ahead of them. After they both lost in the Top 8 at $10K Vegas, they were quite excited to play in an all Las Vegas $10K final. They drove down here together and had agreed to a prize split before the tournament began. Each player is taking home $2,000 for the weekend, but Jack won the trophy.

Congratulations to Jack Garrett, the $10K Los Angeles Champion!

Garrettt sat and shuffled his deck while Wiitanen took off his shoes to stretch. “I understand this might help!” “Josh, put on your shoes and play,” chided head judge Matt Tabak.
“Josh Wiitanen,” he said, talking to himself. “You are so broken.”
Jack Garrett is a student from Las Vegas. “Josh [Wiitanen] made me come to this tournament. I could be sitting on my couch now!” He grinned, obviously kidding. “Adam beat me in the Swiss, so I’m out for vengeance . . . and hoping I don’t get beat.”
“This card is broken against you, by the way, just so you know. It’s gonna win me the game.”

In a Titans mirror match that saw each player match his opponent on an almost drop-for-drop basis, the deciding factor was turn 4.
Jones had a good curve with a turn 1 The New Brotherhood, and after turn 4, Prosak was down to 25 endurance.
Ryan got his The New Brotherhood on turn 1 and hit his curve, so he was hitting hard extremely early. Eugenio, packing his Doom/New Gods deck, missed his 3-drop, but thought he was in decent shape when he used The Source to eliminate Ryan Jones’s The New Brotherhood.
At a time when Curve Sentinels players were beginning to run new tech, primarily Total Anarchy and the Overload/Nasty Surprise combo, David Bauer was right on the cutting edge.
With the general Golden Age environment fat with Teen Titans and Curve Sentinel decks, the time is right for new decks to emerge and old decks to be innovated.
After picking their brains with some more serious questions, I was curious to see what some of the staff and competitors at $10K LA were interested in seeing as extended art promos in the future.
Table one saw teammates Ryan Jones and Billy Zonos duke it out in a TNB Blitz mirror match.
Wiitanen was playing Teen Titans against Rodriguez’s TNB Blitz. Both players agreed that the match was exceedingly close.
Do you think cards like Savage Beatdown and others need to receive errata?
With PC Amsterdam just around the corner there has been a lot of debate as to what the top decks will prove to be in the Marvel Modern Age format. We asked eleven of $10K LA’s players and judges what they felt were the top decks in the format, and this is what they had to say.
"Let it be known, though, that these pink sleeves I’m playing with were honestly played because of Vidi’s performance in Vegas."
Robert Gallagher is the easy choice for the player with the most unique deck early in this event. After two rounds at Los Angeles he hasn’t won a game, but the deck he’s brought with him has the potential to kill on turn 2, and the ability to put your endurance total seriously negative on turn 3.
The popularity of Teen Titans and Curve Sentinel is no surprise, but there are some trends reflected in these raw numbers that were highly interesting.
