The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

A Moment with David Leader
Anand Khare

Metagame.com: That was a very interesting match we just saw. Why did you choose an MMK Modern-style concealed deck?

David: The reality is that having spent so much time preparing for DC Modern, I didn’t have that much time. Playing Sentinels isn’t that great unless you have tech for the mirror. I saw this deck from the European $10K and realized that it could be easily tweaked into a good deck. I played several matches against Sentinels and never lost. It’s also good against Titans. Ironically, though, this deck has a lot of problems with the rogue decks of the format. Hopefully things work out.

Metagame.com: What new decks do you expect to make an appearance today?

David: We got some information that not one but two teams were playing the Kang/New Brotherhood deck. I have seen that some people have gone back to Teen Titans. A lot of the players who are here for fun really want Avengers to work, so they’re playing decks from the new set. I think that in the end, the Kang/New Brotherhood deck will be the biggest impact deck.

Metagame.com: Are there any cards from The Avengers that you truly expect to influence the metagame?

David: Yes. If a lot of the location-based decks are on the rise, I expect a lot of decks to play War of Attrition. I also expect Beetle, Armorsmith to become a force once people start playing weenie decks. He’s obviously great with Dr. Light, essentially allowing you to search out all the 2-drops in your deck. There’s a lot of potential with other Avengers cards, but I haven’t had a chance to play with a lot of them.

Metagame.com: Are your teammates playing the same deck?

David: My only teammate that came today is playing New School.

Metagame.com: Could you describe which players and decks you expect to appear in the Top 8?

David: We have a great field out here today. I think Sentinels are on the downturn, and I think a lot of Sentinel players are going to stick with the Flame Trap/Total Anarchy plan, which is incorrect. Despite this, they should still be about half of the Top 8. I think you’re going to see a fair number of new decks. I think that at least one TNB will break through. I think that at least one or two decks that break through will be decks that didn’t exist before Avengers. One spot is up in the open—hopefully me, maybe Teen Titans, although Teen Titans is a poor choice in this metagame with Null Time Zone everywhere.
