Well, what do you know. “HaJo” is 5-0, and sitting at table 1. Gregory is the latest French pretender to the Marvel throne, and it’s up to him to stop the Germans from completely dominating this tournament. His Teen Titans deck has been treating him well today, and the word on the street is that he actually beat a German in round 4. This might seem unbelievable for those of you reading the coverage, but this hero has shown us that it can be done. Now all he has to do is repeat his performance against the Alpha German.
Hans won the die roll and chose odds, leading with Boliver Trask to fetch a Hounds of Ahab. Gregory came back with a Tim Drake, who ran over Mister Cannon Fodder to put him ahead 48–49. Vive la France!
Boliver came back for an encore, KO’ing his poor alter ego and fetching another Hounds who came out as well. Hans flipped Total Anarchy and team attacked Robin, but a Heroic Sacrifice let a newly recruited Dawn Granger Dove take one for the team. Hank Hall Hawk then stunned Boliver, who went to the discard pile courtesy of the German’s Total Anarchy.
On his initiative, Gregory recruited Red Star and Hans matched him with the omnipresent Sentinel Mark V. Red Star stunned Mark and a Finishing Move put him away for good. Hank and Tim then got in unopposed past Hans’ army of Hounds, who then tried to attack the pesky Robin. An Overload - Savage Beatdown team-up got rid of one Hounds but Hans had the Reconstruction Program to get it back and power up, finally getting rid of Tim Drake. Back on Hans’ initiative, and both players made their trademark 5-drops in Nimrod and Garth ◊ Tempest. Nimrod tried to take out Red Star on the subsequent attack, but the Frenchman had a trick up his sleeve, pumping his Red Star to remove Nimrod’s repair counter. Hans then passed the turn to Gregory, who had Garth and Hank Hall ready but chose not to attack with either of them. Instead, he recruited Tim Drake with boost and Roy Harper ◊ Speedy. Hans, being the pro he is, had his Bastion as well and proceeded to take one of his trademark five minute pauses to figure out how to set up his defense. Gregory tried to hurry him along, but Hans would have none of that, checking and rechecking his resources and doing math in his head. When he finally passed, the Frenchman immediately team attacked with all of his characters to take down Nimrod and played Teen Titans Go! to do it again, going after Bastion this time. More counting and mumbling ensued as Hans tried to figure out the optimal play. He came up with a triple pump on Tim Drake and an attempt to Overload it in response to the attack. Tim Drake hit the bin, but the others took down Bastion. Another Teen Titans Go! and two Finishing Moves later, the loss of Robin didn’t seem that grave compared to what Hans had to suffer. French victory was imminent, ladies and gentlemen. Could Gregory finally break the feature match streak?
Magneto, Master of Magnetism was all that stood between him and a 6-0 record. He revived and replayed his Tim Drake with boost, and readied for what was probably the last combat phase of the game. Magneto had a lot of options to choose from. None of Gregory’s characters could stand up to him individually, but he was outnumbered by a lot. Hans chose a different approach and swung his Hounds into Tim Drake, trying to finish it off with Nasty Surprise and Overload, but a Not So Fast! stopped him dead in his tracks. Magneto then took out Garth, and he survived the ensuing team attack by powering up, giving Hans a glimmer of hope at salvaging this game.
Koriand’r Starfire showed up just as the judge came over to announce this would be the last turn with the endurance totals at 20 for Hans and 22 for Gregory. Reconstruction Program got back Bastion for Hans who replayed it and announced “Here we go.” If he could weather this attack, he actually has a good chance of winning this game. Gregory realized this and paused for the first time, plotting and planning the best way to get around Hans’ gigantic characters. Koriand’r, Tim and Hank ended up team attacking Bastion, adding up to a total of 16 ATK. Hans’ response was to activate his Bastion twice and play Acrobatic Dodge, giving it a total of 17 DEF. A Tamaran for Gregory forced Hans to Reconstruction Program to power up again, but it did let Bastion survive the team attack and evened the endurance scores at 20 apiece. Gregory considered his options, and after a small pause, declared no attacks with a scowl. Hans took no time attacking Red Star with Bastion and Gregory could do nothing but extend the hand, mourning his lack of a Betrayal.
