Adam Horvath missed Day 2 at the Pro Circuit by one win, but thankfully for the Amsterdam champ, that just meant he was able to get his Sealed Pack on in the
Green Lantern Corps $10K on Saturday. He finished the Swiss rounds with only one loss, using a defensive Green Lantern affiliated deck to 3-0 the draft before the cut to the elimination rounds.
Pack one gave Adam a
Two-Face, Split Personality right off the bat, marking a nice opening for the PC winner. Pack two delivered the interesting choice of
Hal Jordan, Green Lantern of Sector 2814, No Evil, and
Solomon Grundy, and Horvath went the Green Lantern route by sticking Hal in his pile.
Emerald Twilight, Only a Friend, and
Kilowog were the interesting options for pick 3, and Adam kept with the ring wielder plan that served him so well in draft one, sticking the 6-drop in his pile. Pick four went to
Helping Hand, and pick five gave Adam
Space Bears. Pick six gave Adam his first plot twist in
Only a Friend Can Betray You and pick seven was
Birthing Chamber, while the rest of the first pack was mostly chaff.
It's interesting to note how much things have changed since yesterday. Players learned pretty rapidly what the best cards in Green Lantern Corps looked like at the PC. After a day of Sealed Pack and a draft earlier today, these $10K players clearly got the message, as Horvath saw few good cards in the latter half of the pack.
Pack two opened with
Chopping Block times two for Horvath, the first over
Azrael Batman and the second over nothing particularly special. Pick three was
Nero Unleashed over
Coast City, and then
Hector Hammond over another Coast City in the next pack. Green Lantern cards were clearly not flowing back from the left, so Horvath was forced to start filling in his curve with off-team characters like
Major Force. A late
Kreon added to Adam's GL count, but he'd need some real sauce in pack three to end up with a good deck.
Through Pack 2, Horvath had zero 4-drops in his deck and a mix of GL and Anti-matter/Emerald Enemies cards.
Pack three gave Adam one of the items he was looking for as a
Hard-Traveling Heroes practically leapt from the pack into his pile. He grimaced in pack two over the choice of
Rot Lop Fan or
Light Armor, but as you cannot miss your drops in this game, the shifty member of the Lantern Corps was the proper pick.
Sinestro Defiant and
Boodikka were Adam's next two picks before an Azrael appeared before him, accompanied by
Goldface, Coast City, and Helping Hand. This time, Horvath took the 7-drop beater. Kyle Rayner filled the last required 4-slot over
Pest Control, and
Empire of Tears was taken over another Heroes and a
Highmaster. When faced with the same choice the next pack, Adam grabbed a second team-up.
After the draft, Horvath said he felt his deck was okay but not spectacular, excepting perhaps the best 7-drop in the game. Kim Caton's deck looked quite solid, so Adam would need some excellent play and maybe a little luck to become the first Vs. System player to add a $10K title to his Pro Circuit trophy.
