It's rare that you get all the decklists from a particular tournament and rarer still that somebody decides to take the time to hammer away at the info until it presents a picture of what the tournament itself looked like so that gamers everywhere can learn from the information. Thankfully, there are strange people like me around who actually like doing that sort of stuff. Greetings folks, I'm Ted Knutson and I'm technically new to Metagame.com, though you may remember me from my finals coverage of Brian Kibler's historic win over Craig Edwards or the Teen Titans Tips and Tricks article I wrote from that same weekend. Whatever the case, it's good to be here. Usually I'm the guy chatting about a little strategy and then interspersing all sorts of amusing anecdotes about your favorite pros in his articles, but not today. Today I'm going to throw all sorts of data from the inaugural Pro Circuit event at you, do a little explaining as to what the data means, and then let you come to your own conclusions. To start with, let's take a look at the archetype data from the Constructed day of the Pro Circuit. Archetype | Players | Points | Drops | Avg. Points | Doom/X-Men | 1 | 4 | 0 | 4 | Fantastic Four Hardware | 2 | 8 | 0 | 4 | Doom | 8 | 31 | 0 | 3.88 | Rigged Elections | 5 | 18 | 1 | 3.8 | Common Enemy | 30 | 100 | 7 | 3.57 | Arkham Inmates | 2 | 7 | 0 | 3.5 | Fearsome Five/Gotham | 4 | 13 | 1 | 3.5 | Hardware Combo | 5 | 17 | 1 | 3.5 | The Brave and the Bold | 21 | 63 | 6 | 3.29 | Little Brotherhood | 12 | 38 | 1 | 3.25 | Teen Titans | 26 | 74 | 9 | 3.19 | Sentinels | 13 | 39 | 2 | 3.15 | Fantastic Four | 36 | 99 | 12 | 3.08 | Beast Bomb | 1 | 3 | 0 | 3 | Jean Grey Lock | 1 | 3 | 0 | 3 | Mutant Nation | 11 | 28 | 4 | 2.91 | Big Brotherhood | 30 | 75 | 11 | 2.87 | Gotham Knights | 11 | 26 | 2 | 2.55 | Fantastic Four/Gotham | 3 | 6 | 1 | 2.33 | Doom/Fearsome Five | 1 | 2 | 0 | 2 | Medium Brotherhood | 3 | 3 | 2 | 1.67 | Doom/Gotham | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1.5 | Psimon Says | 4 | 0 | 4 | 1 | Unknown | 16 | | | |
Note: There were sixteen missing decklists from the coverage on the weekend, and therefore have no archetype. All archetypes for all players are listed below. Explaining the Table
The data above attempts to demonstrate which archetypes did well on the weekend and which did poorly. The drops column is there because it was difficult to determine exactly how many points a player had if they dropped sometime before round 7, but the data for those individuals remains important. Therefore I decided to track the players that dropped as well, and give them each one point. Since players with three match wins were still playing for day 2, they would not have dropped, so I figured dropped players would have somewhere between zero and two wins at the time they dropped, averaging out to one match win a piece. The Avg. Points column simply sums the Match Points from the standings, divides by the number of players playing the deck, and voila! The closer this number is to four, the better, as it took four match wins in order to be able to come back and play on day 2. I'm not going to discuss methodology much here because that would bore you all to tears, but if you have any questions as to why I did or interpreted something the way I did, feel free to e-mail me at mixedknuts@yahoo.com. Interpreting the Archetype Data As we all know, Common Enemy dominated the top 8 of the actual event, but that doesn't exactly tell you how well all CE decks did on the weekend. What it indicates is that a substantial number of players who know how to both draft well and play Constructed well played Common Enemy. Looking beyond the top 8 and examining the entire field instead may give us a slightly different story. I'm going to start by telling you that you should beware of results with a small n (or a small amount of players playing a particular archetype), as it's easy for those numbers to be misleading. That said, the chart above is sorted by strongest performance to weakest, demonstrating that for the number of players that played each deck, Fantastic Four Hardware decks and Doom/X-Men fared the best and Psimon Says is unplayable. Tossing out small n's, you come to the Doom decks, which did reasonably well on the weekend, but receive a big bump from Craig Krempels 7-0 record on day 1. Get rid of that gem and Doom looks a lot worse, making Common Enemy the best deck played by a significant amount of players on the weekend (which we had already guessed, but the data for the full field backs it up). The tutoring power of Boris and Signal Flare plus the card advantage of the Dr. Doom side of the deck is strong like bull, and Common Enemy is the deck to beat for the foreseeable future. If you combine the two different versions of Hardware Combo decks, you'll realize that that archetype did well on the weekend, as did the Rigged Elections combo deck, which didn't post any high flyers (the most wins any player had on day 1 was five), but was fairly consistent in posting results. Of the aggro decks listed, The Brave and the Bold, Little Brotherhood, and Teen Titans all ended up about the same, though if you factor out the dropped players, you'll see that the players who did well with Teen Titans did very well (including a big, fat 7-0 from Eric Green) - as well as Common Enemy without the drops. Brotherhood in general was not the deck to play on the weekend, and the bigger you went with the character base, the worse you were likely to do with it. The other deck that deserves mentioning was the most popular deck on the weekend - Fantastic Four. The most popular deck in a field rarely does well unless it is totally broken, and FF really misses the strength of the Doom side of the Common Enemy deck. Boris gives you a lot more silver bullets to counteract a variety of decks, but Fantasticars and a bit better character curve can't quite matchup to getting the plot twists you want when you want them. Card Counts Once again, I'm missing sixteen decklists, but these are the top 20 cards for what we do have, while the entire list is detailed below. Total Cards: 14007 Total Distinct Cardnames: 262 (or so) Savage Beatdown | 427 | Wild Sentinel | 372 | Acrobatic Dodge | 361 | Have A Blast! | 313 | Signal Flare | 309 | Overload | 307 | She-Thing | 260 | It’s Clobberin’ Time! | 258 | GCPD Officer | 241 | She-Hulk, Jennifer Walters | 229 | Sabertooth, Feral Rage | 217 | Sentinel Mark IV | 217 | Avalon Space Station | 191 | Lost City | 184 | Dr. Doom, Diabolic Genius | 183 | Fizzle | 183 | Teen Titans Go! | 183 | Alfred Pennyworth | 178 | Garth ◊ Tempest | 178 | Boris | 176 |
The number of Savage Beatdowns is unsurprising, but coming into the tournament I would have expected more Have a Blast! than Acrobatic Dodge, and I wouldn't have expected Signal Flare and Overload to be quite as close. The highest non-army character on the list is She-Thing, followed by She-Hulk, Jennifer Walters, Sabertooth, Feral Rage, Dr. Doom, Diabolic Genius, Alfred Pennyworth, Garth, and Boris - in other words, a considerable variety. Avalon Space Station and LostCity were the most popular locations in the tournament. Conclusions Common Enemy is the deck to beat right now, but there remain a variety of viable deck archetypes out there, any one of which can win on any particular day. I remain impressed by all the tricks Teen Titans has up its sleeve, but the deck is ragingly difficult to play well, and many players may find that it's simpler (and easier to win) if they just continue to run the Brotherhood or Sentinel beatdown. The new kids on the block are the combo decks, which also did very well on the weekend and are something players will have to work into their testing rotation if they want to do well this fall. Overall the Pro Circuit proved to be very exciting times for all involved, and signaled excellent things to come for the Vs. System itself. Best of luck, Ted Knutson Mixedknuts@yahoo.com Before I leave, I'll give you the full player/archetype/record list so that you can look up decklists for each player that did the best with each archetype.
