The Mexico City $10K Vs. System tournament took the TNT convention by storm. The turnout of sixty-six attendees was pretty good, considering how long Vs. has been available in Mexico. Beyond that, the competition, deck ideas, and the success that those ideas found were all phenomenal. Players like Alexander Sacal, Luis Eduardo Acero Contreras, and Aguilar Cesar Ahuitzol are bound to make an impact on the growing Organized Play scene of Mexico, and a few of the event’s brightest are clearly bound for higher success at the professional level.
At the end of the day it was veteran TCG player Godinez Estrada Gerardo who won the day. In a three-game finale of new-age Teen Titans versus Common Enemy, Common Enemy barely escaped with the win. The term “nailbiter” is often used to describe good tournament endings. I’ll leave to you to decide whether or not that cliché is overused. However, it seemed like by the end of game three, most people had moved past their wrists and were just chewing on what remained of their elbows. To say it was an intense match doesn’t even begin to describe it. Both second place finisher Alexander Sacal and champion Gerardo deserve much praise for their efforts and skill.
Heading to Mexico, knowing how new Vs. was to most players, I really didn’t know what to expect. By the end of the weekend, I was blown away by some of the most deadly and cutting-edge decks I’ve ever seen. With Gen Con SoCal right around the corner, now is the time for serious competitors to start looking for a new edge or a secret weapon, and this event’s coverage is the perfect place to start.
