Quarterfinals: Julien Dez vs. Guillaume Matignon
Stan van der Velden

This is one of the two quarterfinal matches that is actually being played out. Both Andre Muller and Hans-Joachim Höh decided not to show up, opting not to reschedule their flights. This gave Kristian Kockott and Dean Sohnle a bye.

Meanwhile, Guillaume and Julien have to earn their top 4 berth the hard way. Guillaume is playing Fantastic Fun, a fairly standard deck as far as decks go, but Julien is playing something I’m not really familiar with. One of the quarterfinalists was kind enough to explain that it’s a
Rigged Elections deck that uses Alfred Pennyworth to grab a bunch of Cosmic Radiations to instantly win after teaming up his Arkham Inmates, Gotham Knights and Fantastic Four characters.

Game 1

Julien led with
Alfred Pennyworth, and Guillaume began setting up his combo with Franklin Richards and a Baxter Building that got him Advanced Hardware. He used Franklin to recruit both Mr. Fantastic, Reed Richards and Invisible Woman, The Invisible Girl on turn 2, putting the Advanced equipment on his female character. Julien responded with his own Mr. Fantastic that yielded no equipment and, to make matters worse, managed to mill two Cosmic Radiations and A Child Named Valeria away.

The next turn  was Guillaume’s turn to get unlucky, as he responded to his draw by activating
Baxter Building and hit Mr. Fantastic - Stretch and a Cosmic Radiation of his own. Guillaume recruited Barbara Gordon Oracle, and used it to draw an extra card. At this point he had Wyatt Wingfoot, Harley Quinn, Alfred Pennyworth, and Ventriloquist ◊ Scarface in hand. Each of these, in addition to another copy of  Cosmic Radiation, were ready to drop next turn if need be. Julien just played a She-Thing and gave it a big Flamethrower.

On Guillaume’s attack, Alfred bounced back to Julien’s hand and got
World’s Finest. Julien took quite a lot of endurance loss from the She-Thing. Mr. Fantastic once again showed that he’s not all that by milling two more Cosmic Radiations for Guillaume, but he had to be happy about his board of four characters against Julien’s Barbara.

Thing, Ben Grimm showed up to help out his female counterpart, and he got the same Flamethrower, ending a quite uneventful build for Guillaume. Julien had some thinking to do, as his hand by now included five different 1-drops and he also had the option to draw a card with Oracle. He recruited Alfred before drawing another card which, in theme with all the activations this matchup, got him another Mr. Pennyworth. His second character for the turn was Harley Quinn.

“What on earth is that deck?”

I’m just glad I’m not the only one who didn’t understand. That was his whole turn, though, and he braced against the onslaught Guillaume was going to unleash with his characters—characters that suddenly actually looked good, even though they were never really meant to be in combat. Thing threw his
Flamethrower at Alfred, and Julien flipped Cosmic Radiation and Rigged Elections in response. Then he turned over World’s Finest to team Arkham Inmates and Gotham Knights, and . . . nothing happened. His characters weren’t Fantastic Four, so they didn’t get to untap, and Alfred got stunned. Guillaume was then free to reign surpreme on the battlefield, putting Julien at a very dangerous 13 with only Alfred in play. That obviously wasn’t gonna do it, and Julien conceded.

Game 2

This game sure started a lot better for Julien, who led with a
GCPD Officer and followed it up with Alfred and Wyatt Wingfoot on turn 2. Guillaume had his trademark Mr. Fantastic, who fetched Fantasticar. His turn 3 featured Luke Cage, Hero for Hire who got equipped with Advanced Hardware. Mr. Fantastic got an Unstable Molecules, and he drew some extra cards with a flipped Antarctic Research Base to set up his late game. Julien’s deck finally kicked into gear as Alfred fetched Rigged Elections and he played the dangerous Commissioner Gordon, a card that could take out the Fantastic Fun deck’s equipment and make it a lot less fun. Alfred came back for an encore to finish the build phase, and Mr. Fantastic took on the Officer. Both got powered up, and Commissioner Gordon banned the Advanced Hardware before Julien made his next move, which was another power-up. Guillaume slammed down another power-up of his own and GCPD Officer got stunned. Wyatt Wingfoot then got smashed by Luke Cage and KO’d by his owner before the players moved on to turn 4.

Julien had only one card going into the turn, which Guillaume knew was a
World’s Finest—it had just been retrieved with Alfred. Julien still managed to play both Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman. A Royal Decree and the fetched World’s Finest teamed up Julien’s entire team, which suddenly looked pretty menacing, as the five characters he had in play could feed Rigged Elections fast. A 4-drop Invisible Woman came into play for Guillaume, and he just smashed the small men on the other side. This left Julien with three guys and a Cosmic Radiation as his one card in hand. So far his deck wasn’t performing too well, as he really needed all five characters in play to have a good shot at winning this game.

Guillaume continued to upgrade his mainstays with a 5-drop
Mr. Fantastic, Stretch who got a Flamethrower equipped to him. Julien’s turn was a little more complicated, as he used Alfred to fetch A Child Named Valeria, then activated the little Mr. Fantastic, whiffing again. He then used Cosmic Radiation to untap both, letting Alfred fetch a Bat-Signal and giving Mr. Fantastic another chance to miss, which he did. His Bat-Signal fetched Barbara Gordon and he used her to draw a card, but he had to pass again with four characters in play, although he did have Valeria to make sure they stayed there.

Luke Cage went after Invisible Woman and Julien used his Child to save her. The fact that she didn’t get stunned did allow Guillaume to attack her repeatedly, though, and he put Julien down to 17 with the subsequent attacks.
Cosmic Radiation then dealt 13 more, leaving him at 4. His next turn didn’t give him a miracle, and he lost 2 games to 0.

Guillaume Matignon wins and advances to the semifinals!
