Round 4: Stephen Silverman vs. Edwin Colleran
Anand Khare

These players are sitting at undefeated at table 1 going into the fourth round. They’ve both come a long way—Stephen is from Philadelphia, and Edwin hails from Orlando. Edwin won the die roll and selected the even initiatives.

Both players mulliganed their openers. Stephen recruited Ted Kord ◊ Blue Beetle, while Edwin had no first turn play. Stephen discarded Sue Dibny to Ted to get Booster Gold, and play moved to turn 2. Edwin recruited Talia, Beloved Betrayer and passed. Stephen recruited his Booster Gold and equipped him with Nth Metal. Edwin was forced to pass, and Booster crushed Talia. Ted was exhausted, discarding a Flamethrower to get another Nth Metal.

Turn 3 was Stephen’s initiative, and he had the optimal Shayera Thal ◊ Hawkwoman equipped with Nth Metal. Edwin recruited Sarge Steel with boost, targeting Ted. In response, Stephen used him to get yet another Nth Metal. Ted was KO’d. In combat, Booster went after Talia. Edwin flipped UN Building, teaming-up Villains, League, and Checkmate. He reinforced and Talia stunned. Stephen stunned Sarge with Shayera, choosing not to search. Before combat ended, Edwin flipped Leslie Thompkins's Clinic to gain an endurance. Talia’s ability kept her around in recovery, and Stephen led 50-41.

Edwin was up on 4, and he had his Merlyn, Deadly Archer. Stephen recruited Katar Hol ◊ Hawkman and equipped him with an Nth Metal. In combat, Edwin flipped a Checkmate Safe House and activated Merlyn to stun Booster Gold. Edwin passed to Stephen, who attacked Sarge Steel with Shayera. The 2-drop was stunned. Next, Stephen sent Katar Hol into Merlyn. Edwin played Meltdown to get Nth Metal before the attack was legal. Stephen had Magnificent Seven, though, and Merlyn was stunned. In recovery, Talia was KO’d, and the Clinic kept Sarge Steel around. Stephen led, 50-33.

On turn 5, Stephen could only manage to under-drop with Booster Gold, skipping his resource drop in the process. Edwin had Annihilation Protocol ◊ OMAC Robot next to Merlyn in the support row. Stephen flipped World’s Greatest Heroes and team attacked Shayera and Booster into Annihilation Protocol. Shayera’s ally trigger got another copy of Katar Hol, and Edwin let the Robot trade with Shayera. Katar Hol ran over Merlyn, and neither player had anything else to do. Stephen still led, 47-24.

Edwin kicked off the sixth turn with Enemy of My Enemy for Blackheart. He set up with both of his characters in the support row, and then passed. Stephen recruited John Henry Irons ◊ Steel from his resource row without replacement. Steel’s ability gave Booster Gold a Flamethrower. Stephen set up with Booster protecting Katar Hol and Shayera Thal protecting John Henry Irons. Milton went into the tank to figure out the optimal sequence of attacks. Eventually, he sent his Robot into Steel with a power-up. Stephen used Flamethrower, then KO’d it to Steel to power-up as well. Edwin flipped and used Brother Eye to force the trade, Stephen KO’d his remaining equipment to brick-wall and stun the Robot. Blackheart took down Katar Hol, but Stephen was able to swing back with Steel and a few copies of No Man Escapes the Manhunters to lock down the win.
