The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 10: Fergus O'Shea vs. Tom Moore
Tim Willoughby

In the final round, if you were German, you had about a 2/3 chance of being a player who was locked in the Top 8. If you weren't one of the three players of Team Hans, though, the best you could hope for was a bubble match, which is we saw here.

After an uneventful first turn, Tom led off the action in this Top 8 bubble match with Dusk, Cassie St. Commons, to which Fergus responded with Dan Whitman ◊ Black Knight. The bigger boy won the fight quite convincingly without any real drama. For turn three, it was still all about the 2-drops for Fergus, who recruited Natasha Romanoff ◊ Black Widow, Super Spy, and spent his final resource point on making Black Knight huge for the turn, at the cost of a Hercules in the resource row.

Tom's character for turn three was the rather shifty Ricochet, whose ability, and 5 (effectively 6) DEF are both handy additions to the very defensive Spider-Friends deck of Moore's. When the Black Knight tried to take him down, there was a flurry of action as Spider Senses made Ricochet's defense eight, and Fergus powered up and used Heroes in Reserve for two to get up to stunning range, only to be brought back down to earth by a second copy of the powerful Spider-Friends defensive plot twist. With such a strong wall up, Fergus had no other plays after the bounce. Ricochet managed to take an effective revenge on Natasha for the sins of her Black Knight compatriot.

Spider-Man, Peter Parker only added to the power of the evasive board on Moore's side of the field. Parker does just about everything but flavor text. Fergus, meanwhile, again went underdropping—though with Black Panther coming out as a 7 ATK/6 DEF, and Black Knight again being pumped up, it barely felt like it. With a little help from Going My Way? Spider-Man took to the air, allowing him to attack through a protected Natasha Romanov. Ricochet then tried to do a number on the 6 ATK/6 DEF Black Knight with some help from Savage Beatdown. The plot twist was well negated though, with an Acrobatic Dodge being more than enough to ensure a bounce. Black Panther attacked into Ricochet in order to try to make all of the remaining heroes on Moore's side of the field a little more approachable. This attack went like a charm, and the endurance went to 44–39 in Tom's favor.

With Ricochet out of the way, there No Man Escapes the Manhunters came online, and Peter Parker was a marked man all of a sudden, getting stunned by O’Shea's 2-drop.

Turn five was the first turn since turn two where Fergus recruited an on curve character, and with an ATK of 10, She-Hulk, Gamma Bombshell almost felt like an overdrop. The same could not be said for Moore's character for the turn, a lowly Ricochet, who stood in the back row next to Dusk, who was in turn being protected by Spider-Man.

Much like the turn before, Black Panther was after Ricochet, and again she had his number. From the tussle between the two one might think that there was something going on between the characters. She-Hulk then took on the main man, Peter Parker. With help from Call Down the Lightning it was a rather one-sided attack, and the only real decision for Moore was if it was appropriate for him to evade or reinforce. In the end he decided to pay 1 endurance to ensure that his men wouldn't be KO'd and reinforced. Finally Natasha went for Dusk, with Heroes in Reserve making her more than big enough to get the stun. Moore evaded, and Miss Romanov eventually was able to attack direct to the face. Moore was now on the ropes, with just 25 endurance to his opponent's 37.

For turn six, Tom had Scarlet Spider, Ben Reilly, but quickly lost his Dusk to Wonder Man's ability to put him in a deeper hole. If he could get to turn seven and do things with Spider-Man, The Amazing Spiderman then he might yet pull it out, but on the board he looked in trouble. He flipped Going My Way, and team attacked into Wonder Man, getting the stun. The attacks back from Fergus started with a team attack from Black Panther and She Hulk on Scarlet Spider, getting the stun, but losing She Hulk, and not having played She Hulk's ability to give her invulnerablility.

Turn seven saw powerful characters on each side of the field, with Hercules squaring off against Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man, as O’Shea towered over Moore in terms of endurance, leading 26-10. Hercules’s ability seemed particularly relevant in the face of his opposite number.

The first action of combat was for Moore to fetch Spiderman, Cosmic Spiderman, who amply dealt with Hercules the first time he tried to attack. Of course, Hercules has the vigour of a god, and used his ability to ready, forcing Moore to fetch a second copy using Costume Change. He had held off the worst of the attacks, and while Scarlet Spider took a bit of a kicking, Moore was alive, and every turn he stayed that way boded well for his chances.

Unfortunately at this point there were a number of implosions. Lappy 2, who had valiantly managed to cover huge amounts of Vs on its very first $10K tournament, got tired and decided to have a little sleep. It also rather seemed that Tom felt it was time to allow his wits to desert him. Having used up all the cards in his hand the turn before, he had a very rough looking turn, in which he could get back Cosmic Spiderman with Avalon Space Station, but was having trouble finding enough resources, and indeed dealing with the uniqueness rule. He did have the initiative, and was able to get his 8-drop out after a little comedy of errors, but it did cost him The Amazing Spider-Man. A 21 ATK/21 DEF on attack just wasn't good enough though, and Fergus took it down on that turn as he had too great a multitude of attackers and combat pumps.

Fergus O’Shea wins.
