The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

7:30 PM: The High Price of Fashion

Being pretty slim, Stephen King isn’t the most “insulated” of gamers, and as such, the well air-conditioned tournament hall can get a little chilly for him. So, he went to his friend Gerard Fabiano earlier today and asked to borrow his hoodie. Gerard was attached to his clothing but promised, “If you are playing for Top 8, I’ll lend it to you.”

Fast forward to round 19, where Stephen is playing for the Top 8.

“So, Gerard, I’m playing for Top 8. Can I get that hoodie? I’m freezing.”

“Well, I’m playing for $750, and it’s my lucky hoodie. It’s worth a lot to me!”

“Well, if you give it to me and I win the Pro Circuit, I’ll buy it from you for $750.”

I have never seen Gerard take off a hoodie so fast.

5:13 PM: He Hungers . . . For Draft!

The second draft of the day is over, and there are only two players who have been able to remain undefeated. Anthony Justice of The Donkey Club is desperately looking for another Top 8 finish after Pro Circuit Indy, and with an impressive 6-0 run today, is sitting in first position. Ryan Lockard, on the other hand, has made the long climb up. After squeaking into Day 2 at 6-4, he needs to continue his unbeaten run to have a shot at Day 3. Matt Oldaker’s unbeaten run ended in a big way this draft, mostly via two concessions to help his fellow Donkey Club teammates. He’s still in first position going into the final draft, but his Top 8 is not locked; he needs at least one win to guarantee himself a chance at the $40,000.

While Kree still dominated the top decks, it definitely seems like the other teams have balanced out, with Inhumans making the biggest inroads. Many players consider [Franklin Richards, Creator of Counter-Earth] the premier card of the format, and it shows—he appeared in nearly every Inhumans deck.

4:20pm Mi Affiliation Es Su Affiliation

Draft day has a way of bringing out some cool interactions between cards that usually wouldn’t get played in most Constructed formats. I was walking around, and I saw some cool interactions with the Skrull Team-Up, Act of Defiance. The key thing that most people forget is that you can choose an affiliation your opponent controls as well!

One match I was watching featured a player using this trick in combination with Battleworld so that his characters got not only the Heroes of Earth affiliation, but the Villains of Earth affiliation as well! Then the player in question played Sworn Enemies to gain an additional +2 ATK and put his opponent just below 0 endurance. Sometimes, it’s just the little things that count.

2:28 PM: Don’t You Know Who I Am? I’m the Oldaker!

If Matt Oldaker had a keyword at this Pro Circuit, it would certainly be “invulnerability.” After running the tables on Day 1, he has gone on to sweep his first Draft pod, putting him in the record books with the longest winning game streak in Pro Circuit history. The only other player ever to go undefeated on Day 1, Aaron Weil, did so last year at this event before ignominiously losing every round on the Draft day. Matt has already dodged that bullet, and it looks like it would take a freight train to derail him from a Sunday appearance.

Matt is no stranger to the bright lights of Sunday; he was able to make Day 3 at Pro Circuit Atlanta, and by his own admission, his skills are much improved since then. I wouldn’t get in his way.

Thirteen matches? Thirteen wins. Thank you very much.

12:28 PM: Draft Breakdown – Full Court Kree Press

The first draft is done and it’s clear that the Kree have invaded! The Kree won more than 50% of the draft pods and were the only really prominent team to be mono-team. The Inhumans have appeared quite frequently in the winning decks, paired with Heralds or in some Extended Family–powered Skrull decks.

Only time will tell whether the invasion can be fought off. The Heralds decks are not equipped well for a devastating turn 6 press turn, especially one that is powered by The Lunatic Legion, which every Kree player always seems to have.

Matt Oldaker solidified his position to make the Final 8 with a commanding 3-0 performance, and he looks almost impossible to dislodge from a Sunday berth. Notable winners include the mad doctor himself, Jason Hager, Anthony Justice (fresh from his Top 8 in Indy), Patrick Yapjoco, and Anand Khare.

There are still six rounds to go, so anything can happen! Stay tuned.

11:05 AM: All that Glitters is Extended Art

As our Pro Circuit participants have found out, there are many fringe benefits to attending. Each event has a unique Extended Art participation award, usually a premier card from the current set. PC: L.A. is no exception. Each player got an exclusive Air-Walker, Gabriel Lan. Exhaust your opponents’ characters in style!

Those individuals who are playing in today’s $10K event also have the chance to get a card that was definitely saw much use yesterday—Reign of Terror. Doom’s guards never looked so good.

And for any player who participated in three or more side events, a Dagger, Child of Light was there to make sure that Midnight Sons was always on time.

9:36 AM: Lies and Statistics

Of the 107 players to reach Day 2, exactly 50 had three or fewer losses. The decks they played were as varied as the players themselves; each of the major teams came up with different ways to approach the format. The TDC stall deck performed excellently—nearly all of their members went 7-3 or better, and PC Top 8 player Matt Oldaker had a completely unblemished record. FTN brought a tuned Doom Crisis deck that was also extremely successful, catapulting their stars Vidi Wijaya and Ryan Jones to terrific 8-2 records. Finally, Adam Prosak and friends (he would call them “barns”) took an innovative Frankie Raye ◊ Nova, Optimistic Youth / The Phantom Stranger, Wandering Hero / Devil’s Due contraption to great success.

Checkmate / Heralds

But whatever they played on Friday is now in the past, and it’s up to their skills in Heralds of Galactus Booster Draft to determine who will play on Sunday. The prevailing wisdom is that Kree is the premier affiliation to draft, but there are rumblings that the shapeshifting Skrulls might be the way to go. With three drafts to go, its time for the theory to be put aside and the combat to commence on the playing field.
