Round 16: Jeroen Remie vs. Kristian Kockott
Rui Oliveira

It would be a classic battle at the top tables in any European premier event. The Germans and the Dutch are among the best card-gaming players in Europe . . . heck, in the world. The German Kockott has been quietly making a name for himself with his play here in Amsterdam, while the Dutch Remie is already a familiar face.

The name of the game was “Superman Draft.” That meant no more concealed shenanigans, but a lot of cosmic action going on. Even for a feature-match veteran like Jeroen Remie, the setup was impressive.

“These scorekeeping computers . . . very cool.”

Remie had to mulligan, and neither player had a play for the first 2 turns. On turn 3, Kristian finally blinked with Silver Banshee. Remie answered with Mercy.

Jeroen followed up with Connor Kent ◊ Superboy, Kon-El, and Kockott totally missed his drop on turn 4. He tried to bounce back with Forager on 5, and the Dutchman replied with Cir-El ◊ Supergirl.

Outnumbered, Kockott carefully plotted his attack. Silver Banshee brought down Mercy once again, and Forager stunned Connor Kent. That allowed Kockott to again even the number of characters and the endurance totals.

The initiative shifted back to Jeroen Remie, and the Dutchman rechecked his resources before unleashing Mongul. The German hit the full-drop once again, playing Orion, True Son of Darkseid.

Frowning, Remie entered his attack step. He sent Connor Kent into Silver Banshee, and then Kristian started using plot twists. Royal Decree connected his two teams, and Heat Vision minimized the damage.

A bit of Super Strength powered-up Cir-El ◊ Supergirl for a swing at Forager. A flurry of discarded characters later, and Remie was forced to spend a second Super Strength and an Up, Up, and Away to stun Forager and save his girl.

Orion came right back at Jeroen, attacking Cir-El ◊ Supergirl. Jeroen fell to 17 endurance, with Kristian at 20. They both had the same turn 7 drop, Gog. Kockott’s smaller duo teamed-up for a swing at Remie’s Gog.

When the German sent his Gog in, Remie stared at his low endurance total and conceded, shaking his head. Then he stood up and entered his new endurance total as -842 on the computer, prompting a puzzled look on every spectator who walked into the Feature Match area.
