The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017
While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

What isn’t there to say about Scott Smith? For a long time, Scott was the number-one-ranked Booster Draft player in the world. He entered PC: LA as the number-one-ranked player in the world, and he left as the number-one-ranked player in the world with a result of twentieth place in the tournament. Still at the top of the rankings, Scott (a.k.a. “Coolzero”) joins me with his ever-looming presence and enforcing words of wisdom.
How does it feel traveling across the Tasman for this $10K event? New Zealand is a good place to come to. I am glad to be here.
This event is Sealed Pack—was that a reason it made you come? I came despite of Sealed. I think that Marvel Knights sucks for Sealed Pack, but Sealed Pack in general rules. I’m also here for the free product, wink wink at UDE.
After three months of Marvel Knights, what’s the best draft strategy? 5-drops are the most important part, there are so few good ones around. 4-drops are also important. Cohesion is the key.
Sealed Pack is completely different from Booster Draft, so what types of cards do you want to open? What single card do you want to open? Team-ups, 7-drop bombs—especially Varnae. If I could only have one card, I would want Crime and Punishment. It is the best attack pump.
Why is Vs. appealing to you? I already had a background in Magic, and I like card games. The comics were the ones that really pushed it over the top, superheroes and superpowers. The whole aspect of a fantasy world, and hearing about characters that I’ve never heard of before, is very cool.
Who’s your favorite super hero or villain? What character hasn’t been printed that you would like to see printed? Thor; I love the Avengers. Also Mr. Sinister, I collect the card (first edition only). I really wish they would print good versions of some characters they have already printed, like Gambit.
Do you pretend to be the super hero or villain when you play? Do you make gestures and sound effects when you play plot twists and power-ups? I am always the super hero, never the villain. The story why I collect Mr. Sinister is one of the local players, Luke Bartter, tricked me into taking his ones home with me, and then suddenly everyone started giving them to me . . . and I thought, “Hey, what the heck.”
To what do you attribute your Vs. success? The guys I play with, without them I am nothing.
Is it your circle of friends that keep you in the game? How much time do you spend on VS a week? Yes, definitely. Go out and find some.
You were once the number-one player in the world, and are now second in Australia. Is there a reason why, and how does it make you feel? It is actually all because of World of Warcraft. It takes up so much time and sucked me in like a vortex. Being second? I actually don’t care that much, it was good at the time . . . but such is life.
Is there any advice you want to hand out to the aspiring young players out there? Get that circle of friends—it means cutting down in playtesting, and you don’t have to collect every good card out there.
