The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 1: Patrick Yapjoco vs. Garrett McKinney
Anand Khare

Patrick is a well-known player on the Vs. Professional Circuit. He has three PC money finishes and two $10K Top 8s to his name. Garrett is a well-known local player who’s just getting back into the game. “What are you running, boss?” asked Garrett of Patrick as the competitors sat down. “Something new. Or at least I think it’s something new. Not sure if anyone else is playing this . . .”

Patrick won the die roll and the players wished each other good luck. Garrett mulliganed, while Patrick kept his opener. Patrick chose to take the odd initiatives and kicked things off by just playing a resource. That play was echoed by Garrett, who shook his head at his draw and passed his initiative with no play. Patrick played a 2-drop Kang, Kang Kong to search for a card of his choice and passed

Patrick kicked off turn 3 with Daredevil, Protector of Hell’s Kitchen. Garret again had no play, and he took 4 to the chin. Garret played the ubiquitous Sentinel Mark V on turn 4, while Patrick played Kang, Master of Time. Garret beat into Patrick’s Daredevil, and Patrick was content to enjoy the card advantage granted by his hidden Kang.

Before he played a resource on turn 5, Patrick played Wild Ride to search out Dagger, Child of Light, who he immediately discarded to fetch a Wild Ride. He played 4-drop Kang, Earth Mesozoic-24 removed from the game as his only recruit. Garrett dropped a predictable Sentinel Mark V with boost and dropped it in front of the other Mark V.

Patrick attacked his hidden Kang into the boosted Mark V—an odd-looking play. In quick succession, though, he flipped Midnight Sons naming Kang Council, Midnight Sons naming Brotherhood, and Lost City. He discarded two copies of Kang to force the stun. Garret had a Nasty Surprise, but Patrick had yet another Kang to keep his hidden Kang alive. Daredevil traded with the other Kang with a power-up. He drew two cards with his hidden Kang, and that was the turn. Endurance totals were still high: 40–38 Patrick.

On turn 6, Garrett quickly played a resource and Bastion. Patrick played 6-drop Kang, Lord Kang. Lord Kang was put in the back row next to Mesozoic Kang, who was behind Daredevil. Before Garrett declared any attacks, he played Have a Blast! targeting Patrick’s Lost City. He then used Bastion to pump his Mark V twice. He used Reconstruction Program to return the three Sentinels in his discard pile to his hand, and discarded three more sentinels to pump Bastion for the turn. Garrett declared his Mark V into Patrick’s 10 ATK/10 DEF Kang. Patrick flipped another Lost City and powered up, but Garrett had the Savage Beatdown. Garrett let the stun happen and dropped to 30. Garrett attacked Bastion into Lord Kang. Patrick powered up his Kang, but Garrett had another Reconstruction Program and a Savage Beatdown to boot. Patrick powered up to force the stunback. He closed out the turn by beating Garrett for a little directly and drawing his cards from the hidden Kang. Things were getting a little more precarious, as the endurance totals were now 19–18 in favor of Garrett.

Patrick had initiative on turn 7 and wasted no time in dropping Kang, Lord of Limbo. Garret dropped Magneto, Master of Magnetism behind Bastion. Lord of Limbo moved Magneto to the hidden area, and the Lord went in against Bastion. Garrett was out of gas, and Bastion stunned. Patrick attacked directly for far more than 18, and that was the ballgame.

Patrick Yapjoco wins!
