They got it. The Right Stuff. Oh yeah.
Vs System has without doubt been bolstered of late by a flood of hip-hoppin’, jive-talkin’ Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG kids, and, what’s more, they’re dominating the game. Sitting in the upper echelons of Vs society, we find Yu-Gi-Oh! boys such as Kakarot Turker, Sundeep Dayal, and, of course, the poster boy of Vs to Yu-Gi-Oh! conversion, Alex Antonios.
We’re starting off today with Alex’s interview, because of his hair. It appears that it has become somewhat of an enigma, at least in his hometown of Sydney, where players, shop-owners and judges alike have all threatened to take a razor to his ‘fro-d out noggin while sleeping. So, to inject a bit of personality into this coverage, we’ll be getting everyone’s opinion on the loveable ‘fro, and whether a chop is in the cards.
As for the man himself? The 17-year-old’s reputation precedes him. Having taken out $10Ks in both Brisbane and Adelaide this year (one constructed, one sealed!), placing Top 8 at Melbourne $10K, and making it to day 2 of his first ever PC in So Cal recently, Alex has proven himself as a consistent, confident, and creative player. He came to Vs after a long service on the Yu-Gi-Oh! circuit, and quickly proved that YGO players are not to be underestimated. Can this Yu Kid on the Block make it third time lucky?
As a former Yu-Gi-Oh! player, what’s been the biggest difference between the two games?
I guess it would have to be the big difference in the luck of the game. Yu-Gi-Oh! is a really luck-based game compared to Vs, which is more about skill in most cases. A lot of Vs players tend to be more humble about their skills, which I respect.
What card would you bring from Yu-Gi-Oh! into Vs if you could?
The most broken card ever!!! Chaos Emperor Dragon — Envoy of the End. You pay 1000 life points, which is like the equivalent of a 3-drop in Vs, and you win the game! Ridiculous!
Alex Antonios’ hairdo. What's your take on that, and would you consider wearing your hair in a similar fashion?
If I was Alex Antonios’ father, and I saw his hair, I would be so grateful to have a son like this that I would buy him whatever he wanted, and take him wherever he wanted to go. Not only that, but I would have to call him the greatest son of all time, because his hair is so good. Just seeing Alex Antonios’ hair, makes me want to be him, because it is so good.
Best deck in Silver Age at the moment?
If Alex Antonios’ hairstyle was a deck, it would be the best deck. But seriously . . . the most consistent deck would have to be Lost In Space . . . before this $10k anyway!
Best deck you've ever built?
I haven’t ever really built from scratch — but I enjoy tweaking other people’s builds to make them more consistent. The deck I’m playing today is the best deck I’ve ever tweaked. It’s a version of Jason Au’s El Guapo stall deck.
Best player you've ever played against?
I find Vs has different types of players — the deck builder, the strategist, the skilled player (by this, he means those who actually play well on the spot), and then there is the guy with the good mental game. But the best, most well-rounded player I’ve ever played is Sam Kassis. And definitely not James Kong.
Most fun game you've ever played?
I’ve played multiple fun games against Luke Bartter, where we didn’t finish the game because we were laughing so hard that we couldn’t breathe, let alone pick up our cards.
What are you looking for in Legions?
PC Tech!!!!!!!!!! (He specified there must be a billion exclamation marks.)
Best dressed Vs player?
Paul Ross.
Favorite Vs card?
Hard Sound Construct. It has so many uses, and has been used in so many decks, and is so flexible . . . can I fit anymore “so”s in there?
What are your thoughts on PC Sydney? Are you qualified? Can an Australasian player win it?
PC Sydney is gonna be the greatest PC of all time! And if you don’t attend, you’re a scumbag. I’ll definitely be there, but I think an Australian can take this PC, and, if one doesn’t, stone the flamin’ crows. Actually, wait! Alex Antonios’ hair will win PC Sydney!
