Dimitri Datyeri is playing a Wild Sentinel / Mark IV deck with Longshot, Cover Fire, and Underground Sentinel Base – easily one of the most mathematically resilient and reliable decks in the current environment. Unfortunately, today’s metagame is seeing huge quantities of Flame Trap, which could be a problem.
Higgins is playing a Common Enemy Doom/FF deck. With Things, She-Hulk, and She-Thing lending the deck some muscle, he has the potential for the aggression that couples so well with Doom plot twist control. He’s running Flame Trap and has access to it via Boris.
Game One:
Datyeri seized the initiative and dropped Longshot: Rebel Freedom Fighter on the first turn, activating him but finding none of the cards he named. Higgins played Boris: Personal Servant of Dr. Doom in his front row, and attacked to stun Longshot.
Higgins recruited She-Thing: Sharon Ventura on the second turn, and flipped up a Common Enemy from his resource row. Boris stayed in the front row alongside She-Thing. During his build phase, Datyeri played a resource and two Wild Sentinels. He activated his Longshot to find some more cards, but again missed what he was looking for. She-Thing attacked a single Wild Sentinel, and Datyeri stunned both characters by powering up the Wild Sentinel. Datyeri then sent another Wild Sentinel to attack Boris, but Higgins played an Acrobatic Dodge to avoid losing him.
On the third turn, Datyeri recruited three more Wild Sentinels. Higgins recruited a She-Hulk, opting to hide Boris in the support row behind her. Datyeri stunned a support-row Wild Sentinel to pay for a Search and Destroy, targeting She-Hulk. He activated Longshot, but missed the call for the third time. Datyeri attacked Boris with a Wild Sentinel, stunning him. He also sent two Wild Sentinels in a team-attack against She-Thing. Higgins recovered Boris, and Datyeri recovered a Wild Sentinel.
The first thing Higgins did on the fourth turn was to flip up a Signal Flare, searching for Thing, Heavy Hitter. He recruited a Dr. Doom: Diabolic Genius, placing him in his attack row. Higgins opted to turn down the Signal Flare he had just revealed. During Datyeri’s build phase, he recruited a Sentinel Mark IV, hiding Longshot behind it with two Wild Sentinels still remaining on the field. Higgins attacked the Sentinel Mark IV with Dr. Doom, causing Datyeri to activate Longshot. This time, he named Wild Sentinel and Reconstruction Program, but failed for the fourth time. The Sentinel Mark IV and Doom stunned each other. Datyeri attacked Boris with a Wild Sentinel to stun both characters, leaving another Wild Sentinel to attack Higgins directly. At the end of the turn, Dr. Doom and Sentinel Mark IV both recovered.
Datyeri activated the unlucky Longshot at the beginning of the fifth turn. He named Wild Sentinel and Reconstruction Program, finding the Wild Sentinel but missing the Reconstruction Program. Datyeri then recruited another Sentinel Mark IV and a Wild Sentinel. He activated Underground Sentinel Base, pulling a Sentinel Mark IV from his resource row. Higgins recruited Thing, Heavy Hitter, and hid Dr. Doom behind him. Datyeri team-attacked the Thing with two Wild Sentinels and a Sentinel Mark IV, and Higgins responded by flipping over another Signal Flare from his resource row. He took another Thing: Heavy Hitter, and KO’d that Thing as well as another from his hand to keep the Thing in play alive. Datyeri responded by powering up a Wild Sentinel, and Thing became stunned. Datyeri attacked Dr. Doom with another Sentinel Mark IV, and both were stunned. He then attacked Higgins directly with his third Sentinel Mark IV, causing Higgins to lose seven endurance. Higgins recovered the Thing and Datyeri recovered a Sentinel Mark IV.
Higgins played a resource and recruited Hulk: New Fantastic Four. Datyeri dropped a resource and activated Longshot, naming Wild Sentinel and Sentinel Mark IV. His bad luck streak continued as he missed another Longshot call. He recruited a Wild Sentinel and a Sentinel Mark IV. Higgins attacked with a fifteen-power Hulk against a Sentinel Mark IV, but Datyeri used Cover Fire – enough to boost the Sentinel Mark IV’s defense to eighteen. However, Higgins put Flame Trap on the chain, dropping Hulk’s defense to fourteen. Datyeri’s Sentinel Mark IV was stunned, though some of the breakthrough was prevented by the bonus from Cover Fire. Higgins attacked a Sentinel Mark IV with Thing, who stunned the robot. Higgins recovered his characters, losing nothing, and Datyeri recovered his characters, losing everyone except Longshot.
Datyeri activated Longshot and named Reconstruction Program and Wild Sentinel. He finally hit the Reconstruction Program, but missed the Wild Sentinel. He played a resource, recruited two Wild Sentinels and passed the build to Higgins. Higgins dropped a resource and Signal Flares for Thing: The Ever-Lovin’ Blue-Eyed Thing. He recruits it, and Longshot and the Wilds bounce to Datyeri’s hand from Thing’s effect. Datyeri conceded the game.
Game Two:
Datyeri took initiative on the odd-numbered turns. Both players were dissatisfied with their hands and opted to mulligan.
Datyeri dropped a resource and a Wild Sentinel. Higgins dropped a resource and passed to Datyeri. Higgins lost two endurance from the attacking Wild Sentinel.
Higgins dropped a resource, and recruited Boris in his attack row. Datyeri dropped a second resource and recruited a second and third Wild Sentinel. Boris attacked one of the fresh Wild Sentinels to stun it and himself, and Datyeri attacked Higgins directly for three.
Datyeri played a resource and recruited two Wild Sentinels. Higgins played a resource and recruited Darkoth, hiding Boris behind him. Datyeri used Search and Destroy on Darkoth, stunning a Wild Sentinel, and then attacked Boris for two with a fresh Wild Sentinel. Three Wild Sentinels then attacked directly, for a total endurance loss of four. During the recovery phase, Higgins lost Boris and Datyeri lost a Wild Sentinel.
Higgins dropped a resource and flipped over Flame Trap. Datyeri added Search and Destroy to the chain, targeting Darkoth before Flame Trap resolved. Higgins recruited Dr. Doom: Diabolic Genius and flipped Flame Trap face down. Datyeri used Reconstruction Program to take back a Wild Sentinel, and dropped it as a resource. He recruited a Sentinel Mark IV, which Doom attacked and stunned. Datyeri recovered the Sentinel Mark IV and Higgins recovered Darkoth.
Datyeri played down a resource. He recruited a Longshot and used his effect, finding a Wild Sentinel and a Sentinel Mark IV. He recruited a Sentinel Mark IV and passed to Higgins. Higgins recruited a Robot Destroyer to his attack row protecting Darkoth, and Robot Destroyer hit the Sentinel Mark IV in front of Longshot, causing both to stun from the effect. Datyeri attacked Darkoth with a Sentinel Mark IV, and Higgins saved it with an Acrobatic Dodge. Higgins attacked the Sentinel Mark IV with Dr. Doom, and flipped over a Doomstadt. Sentinel Mark IV stunned, and Darkoth attacked Longshot, stunning him. Higgins recovered everything, and Datyeri recovered Longshot.
Higgins played a resource and immediately flipped it, revealing Signal Flare. He found a Hulk: New Fantastic Four and discarded a Thing: Heavy Hitter. He recruited the Hulk and Datyeri responded with Longshot. Once again, Longshot defied all laws of math and logic and failed to find the named cards. Datyeri recruited a Sentinel Mark IV and two Wild Sentinels. Sentinel Mark IV and Robot Destroyer are stunned by Destroyer’s effect. Hulk attacked Longshot with an It’s Clobbering Time, and Datyeri plays Cover Fire to reduce the breakthrough endurance loss. Higgins flipped Common Enemy and draws, and Dr. Doom attacked a Wild Sentinel. The other Wild Sentinel reinforced it. Darkoth attacked the last Wild Sentinel, and that was game.
