Round 8 Highlights
Mike Rosenberg

Round 8 witnessed the clashing of some well known giants of the Vs. System. The conclusion of the round ended the final undefeated record of the day, which belonged through round 7 to Jeremy Borchardt.

First Match: Jeremy Borchardt vs. Adam Prosak

Both players went through their first four turns recruiting a selection of powerful characters. At the end of turn 5, Jeremy seemed to gain the upper hand when he stunned Garth ◊ Tempest, Terra, and a smaller character. The tables were turned when, on turn 6, Adam Prosak boosted Tim Drake ◊ Robin, Young Detective and recruited Pantha. After recycling Teen Titans Go! thanks to Garth, Adam stunned all of the characters on Jeremy’s field. Once turn 7 rolled around, Adam returned the annoying and powerful Roy Harper ◊ Arsenal to his hand with Garth’s effect and picked off Quicksilver, Speed Demon. By turn 8, when Adam recruited Koriand’r ◊ Starfire and played Press the Attack to recycle Arsenal’s effect, the game was essentially Adam’s.

Second Match: Josh Wiitanen vs. Brian Gates

While both Josh and Brian began their games with the usual drops, Brian slowly took control as he powered up Boliver Trask while defending against Dawn Granger ◊ Dove. Though Josh attempted to recover by using two copies of USS Argus on turn 4, he was not able to turn things in his favor. Josh managed to play Garth Tempest, but thanks to a Cover Fire from Brian, he could not hurt Brian’s field in any way. Turn 6 only got worse for Josh when Brian recruited Bastion and stunned everything on Josh’s side of the field. Though Wiitanen was able to recruit Batman and complete two successful team attacks on Brian’s Bastion and Magneto, Master of Magnetism, it was not enough to recover.

Third Match: Rylan Klatt vs. Tim Batow

While Cosmic Cops is generally great for preventing attacks and stuns, there wasn’t much Rylan could do against Tim. Tim played Assassin Initiate early to help control Rylan’s field in the later turns. On turn 4, Tim activated Flame Trap. Thanks to two of Tim’s Fizzles, Flame Trap resolved without being negated, and Klatt was left with a field of stunned characters. Tim’s constant attacks with Dick Grayson ◊ Nightwing, High-Flying Acrobat proved too much for a crippled Cosmic Cop build to handle, and Rylan ended up conceding before turn 7.

Fourth Match: Vidianto Wijaya vs. John Rich

It’s a clash of the purple robots! While the game started out relatively even, Vidi soon gained an advantage by using Search and Destroy (stunning his Mark III) to stun John’s Sentinel Mark II. Vidi’s own Mark II was then able to stun John’s Mark I, giving him field advantage for the rest of the game. Vidi also recruited Bastion on turn 6, while Rich missed Bastion and was forced to boost a Sentinel Mark V. The game was clinched when Vidi played Magneto, Master of Magnetism.
