David Jafari is a long time trading card gamer who excells at whatever game he turns his attention toward, though he rarely follows through to the game’s higher levels. He generally chooses to not fail a class over chasing after card game tournaments and their elusive cash payouts. Jafari was one of a small handful of players today fielding the old favorite New Brotherhood deck over Medium Brotherhood or Big Brotherhood.
His opponent finished in sixth place at the Indy $10K tournament with Medium Brotherhood, and also managed a ninth place finish with it at Dragon Con. He did not qualify for the first stop on the Pro Circuit, but has been making up for lost time ever since. He has accumulated over 40 points since his Indy $10K performance. He was playing Medium Brotherhood again today.
Both players were 7-1 and it looked like their tiebreakers would carry them through to the Top 8, even with two losses, but nobody was certain exactly what would make the cut.
Neither player made a 1-drop, and Nolan was frustrated when his deck offered him nothing on turn 2, either. Jafari, on the other hand, played a Pyro backed by two The New Brotherhoods. Jafari played Phantazia and Toad on turn 3 and announced, “That is bad news for you buddy” when Nolan had no turn 3 play. With the help of a Savage Land, he took Nolan down to 23.
Nolan’s first play was Blob, while Jafari made a 3-drop Rogue, Anna Raven. Nolan attacked his Blob into Toad and flipped up a pair of his own The New Brotherhoods. Rogue swung at Blob for 12, stunning it. Adding 10 from Phantazia with Savage Beatdown, plus the 6 from Pyro, meant that the game was over on turn 4. Nolan showed him the Acrobatic Dodge he had considered using on the Blob, but Jafari’s draw was so good it wouldn’t have mattered. In fact, he had a Flying Kick in hand for good measure.
David Jafari was a virtual lock for the Top 8 at 8-1 - never discount good ol’ TNB -while Nolan could probably lose and still make it. He was still looking to win one more to be certain.
