The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 6: Walter Cowart Jr. vs. Mark Slack
Toby Wachter

Both of these players are qualified for next week's Pro Circuit, and come into this round with critical 4-1 records. Cowart is from Florida, and is playing Teen Titans, while Slack is playing Sentinels. He actually qualified for the Pro Circuit through the VSUniverse raffle, but was quick to point out that he made the finals of a PCQ.

Game 1

Slack opened with Longshot, which gave him a Wild Sentinel and a Mark IV. Cowart played Tim Drake ◊ Robin, Young Detective, while Slack had a pair of Wild Sentinels. Longshot provided the full four, two of each Sentinel. Overload stunned one of the Wild Sentinels, and Robin stunned Longshot, which was obviously recovered. Slack played three Sentinels on turn three, and Cowart had Hawk and Dove. USS Argus provided some more cards, and Cowart played Terra. Mark IV now reared its ugly head, and Longshot once again hit the full four. Cowart tried his best to stop the assault, using a team attack and Teen Titans Go! to stun as many Sentinels as possible. Hawk attacked a Mark IV and looked to stun it, but Slack discarded four times for power-ups to keep it around. Dove attacked and stunned Longshot, and Mark IV went after Terra, taking a power-up. However, this wasn't enough to take it down, and was a mental error that Slack was quick to point out. After recovery, Cowart was left with Terra and Hawk, and Slack with Mark IV and Longshot.

Longshot missed for a change, and Slack played a Mark IV along with Senator Kelly. Slack flipped over Underground Sentinel Base, activated it and put it on the chain, then flipped over a second one to get another activation. This allowed Slack to put two Mark IV's from his resource row into play. Cowart played Dick Grayson ◊ Nightwing, Titan Leader on turn five, and the Mark IV's got to work. Still, the double Sentinel Base play left Slack short on resources, and Cowart had a nice trick during his attack. He declared a team attack and used Teen Titans Go! to ready everyone, which was followed by Savage Beatdown and a power-up. This allowed him to use Arsenal's activation to stun Slack's defender, which made the attack void and provided an opportunity for another attack. This allowed Arsenal to trade stuns with a Mark IV. Combat left Slack with a pair of Mark IV's and a Wild, while Cowart had Nightwing. Slack played a second Sentinel, and Cowart had Dove along with Arsenal. Mark IV attacked Nightwing, and Cowart flipped over Tamaran. Slack added Combat Protocols to the chain, so Cowart responded with Heroic Sacrifice, stunning Dove. The Mark IV attack that followed was enough to give Slack the first game.

Game 2

By turn two, Slack had two Wild Sentinels and Senator Kelly. Cowart had a two drop Wonder Woman, which left play thanks to a team attack. Slack followed with three more Sentinels, and Wonder Woman went after one of them for a stun. The Sentinels swung back to deal with Wonder Woman, and a Kelly activation brought Cowart down to 34. He played Terra on turn four, while Slack started to bring the Mark IV. The next attack and Kelly activation brought Cowart down to 23. He played Arsenal and Wonder Woman, while Slack played his first Longshot of the game, hitting three. Another Mark IV came into play, and a Base brought an additional one out. Wonder Woman attacked Longshot, and two Savage Beatdowns caused the un-reinforceable X-Men character to take plenty in breakthrough. Terra went after a Wild Sentinel, which was powered-up to prevent a point of breakthrough. In response, Cowart used Arsenal to KO it, readying Terra. This left Terra free to attack Kelly, bringing Slack down to sixteen. Still, the Sentinel counterattack was enough to finish the match.
