The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Metagame Staff

This new foray into the Golden Age metagame has come to the end and we have ourselves a winner—18-year-old Alec Ruden! Alec achieved victory with the burn deck that debuted two weeks ago in Auckland. He won the finals in a squeaker, barely finding enough pump to force through the final points of endurance loss on veteran professional Matt Oldaker. A combination of solid play, luck, and a great deck choice propelled Alec to victory in this, his first major event.

The deck he played, by the way, goes by many names, including “High Voltage” and “Blame Australia” (a misnomer). Whatever you want to call it, though, this deck is taking Golden Age by storm. With the potential to win as early as turn 3 or 4, it makes Squadron look absolutely sluggish by comparison. But it wasn’t the only deck to make a big splash this weekend. Two stall archetypes, TDC Stall and old-school New School, both made their mark on the Top 8. Avengers may never be the same, as two players demonstrated the power of Enemy of My Enemy to shore up matchups in that particular deck. Finally, Big Brotherhood still lives as a viable archetype, thanks to a number of powerful cards from the Justice League expansion.

This new Golden Age is an exciting format, made even more exciting by the fact that it’s a prelude (of sorts) to the upcoming Silver Age PC in San Francisco. It’s tough to say whether any of the archetypes that debuted today will stay on top, but they’re sure to be a force in the metagame for many months to come. Today, though, the strongest force in Golden Age is a kid by the name of Alec Ruden. Congratulations to our $10K Minneapolis champion!

Day 2
Matt’s quite tired after a long weekend of Vs. System, and Alec’s almost too sick to play. The players therefore agreed to play a single game to decide the winner of the match.
Angel's Big Brotherhood faces down Alec's fast-paced burn deck for a chance at the trophy.
Kyle is a Kansas City native and one of the two players running the new TDC Stall deck. Ben took down his teammate, Michael Jacob, in the Swiss.
Day 1
Perhaps the most shocking item of all about this Top 8 is what’s not present. Namely, not a single Squadron Supreme or Teen Titans deck.
Both of these players have two losses, and it’s very likely that they each need to win this game to secure a spot in Top 8.
We revisit these two players in the eighth round of the tournament at table one.
Neither of these players have any Pro-level accomplishments under their belts, but they’re both 5-1 going into the seventh round.
Believe it or not, both of these players are 4-1 going into the sixth round.
Everyone’s favorite super-team, The Donkey Club, has come up with a hot new number.
Both of these players are undefeated going into the fifth round. Angel is from the area, and Kory is a young pro who made the drive from Indianapolis.
Ben Rislove is a local playing a standard Avengers deck. Karl, as most of you should know, is the winner of the recent Pro Circuit Los Angeles.
What we have here are two old-school Vs. professionals playing two old-school decks. However, these decks both feature new additions and new tech for the ever-changing metagame, so this matchup should be far from cut and dry.
Jeffrey Landin is a local player from Maple Grove, Minnesota. Michael Jacob is a name you should already know; I had the opportunity to check out what Michael was playing before the tournament, and I have to say, it’s a spicy one.
Both of these players came a long way to be here. With such significant travel involved for both players, one would hope that this would be a matchup between two top-of-the-line decks.
Exactly one hundred players have made the trip this Easter weekend, and I’ve seen some very interesting decks around the room.
