Round Eight: Alexander Sacal Vs. Cesar Ahuitzotl “Ahuix” Aguilar
Jason Grabher-Meyer

Ahuitzotl won the flip and opted to take initiative on the odd turns. He mulliganed while Sacal opted to keep his hand. Sacal was playing a Teen Titans variant that was capable of soft-locking an opponent in the early game, while Ahuizotl was playing an FF equip deck.

The game didn’t really get started until turn 2, when Hank Hall ◊ Hawk hit the field on Sacal’s side to attack She-Thing. Tamaran powered up Hawk, but an in-hand She-Thing powered up the recruited Sharon and laid Hawk low.

On turn 3 each player hit their drop—Ahuitzotl with Thing, Ben Grimm and Sacal with Beast Boy. Thing attacked Beast Boy, who was quickly powered up with Tamaran to ensure the double stun. However, She-Thing attacked Hawk, forcing him to be KO’d in the recovery phase.

Sacal and Ahuitzotl recruited Terra and Human Torch, Hotshot respectively. Beast Boy stunned Thing and Terra attacked Human Torch. Human Torch was stunned, but not before dishing out a double dose of direct damage thanks to Cosmic Radiation.

Turn 5 happened in a big way for Ahuitzotl, as he recruited Mr. Fantastic, Stretch, and then followed him up with two Fantasticars and a Personal Force Field for Human Torch. Sacal recruited Red Star and braced himself. Human Torch attacked Terra, who in response blew up Tamaran to take She-Thing down with her. Mr. Fantastic then attacked Beast Boy, and Burn Rubber blocked the breakthrough. Sacal opted to recover Beast Boy.

It was Sacal’s turn to take command, recruiting Roy Harper ◊ Arsenal and Tim Drake ◊ Robin, Young Detective on turn 6. Ahuitzotl burned with Torch and then recruited another Torch, passing combat to Sacal.

There was a long pause in play as Sacal silently considered his next move. Finally, he committed to a team attack of Red Star and Tim Drake against Mr. Fantastic. Powering up Red Star with an in-hand Red Star and a new Tamaran, Sacal redirected the resulting stun to Red Star via Tim Drake, and Mr. Fantastic was stunned. Beast Boy then attacked Human Torch, and Ahuitzotl opted to activate Torch in response. Both characters stunned. Arsenal then attacked She-Thing.

Ahuitzotl flipped and activated Avalon Space Station, bringing back a She-Thing for the power-up to save her and stun Arsenal. She-Thing then attacked Tim Drake. By the end of the turn, it was Beast Boy and Red Star versus Human Torch and She-Thing, telegraphing an intent to recruit Mr. Fantastic, Scientific Genius.

However, when turn 7 rolled around, Ahuitzotl actually Signal Flared away his in-hand Scientific Genius in order to get a Thing, The Ever-Lovin’ Blue-Eyed Thing. Recruiting it left Sacal with only Red Star in play. Sacal retorted with a recruit of Donna Troy ◊ Wonder Girl, Beast Boy, and Pantha.

Thing attacked Red Star, but Pantha made a Heroic Sacrifice to disrupt the attack. She-Thing then flew over Beast Boy to attack Donna Troy, who was quickly powered up by a Tamaran. Both characters were stunned and Donna jumped back to Sacal’s hand. A final attack against Beast Boy was enough to make Sacal offer the handshake.
