The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

There are several interesting things to note about this metagame. First of all, this tournament has witnessed a number of varied control strategies coming to the forefront. GLOCK decks, Injustice Gang lock decks, and any Doom variant you can think of are all at the top tables. This is a marked change from tournaments of the past, where New School variants were almost the only game in town if you were looking to play control.

The second interesting thing to note about this format is the effect the latest set. The set’s namesake Justice League teams have seen little or no play, which many players find quite surprising. The other two teams from the set have fared a little better. Secret Society has seen heavy splash play, with both Gorilla Grodd and the Straight to the Grave/Slaughter Swamp combo showing up in a number of control decks. In addition, there is one brand-new Society deck, Brian Eugenio’s Doom Society (featured earlier in the day). The real winning team of the last expansion, though, was Injustice Gang. The team features in seven different decks, representing three different archetypes. A few of these decks are doing very well, and there’s a lot of buzz surrounding the Doom/Gang lock deck.

And, of course, there are the mainstays of Teen Titans and Squadron Supreme. Titans seems to be the choice of the seasoned professionals at this tournament, while a horde of unprepared players have opted for Squadron. I’m sure that we will see representatives of these very powerful mainstays in Top 8, right alongside brand-new teched-out control decks.
