Round 15: Adam Prosak vs. Kyle Dembinski
Michael Palmer

Kyle Dembinski has several impressive $10K finishes, but the Sunday stage has eluded him thus far at the PC level. This weekend could well be his breakout performance. Standing in his way, however, is Adam Prosak, one of the biggest names in the game.

Both players chose to keep their starting hands and Adam led off play with Jacob Lee. Kyle followed suit with Fiddler, and Adam attacked into Fiddler with Jacob Lee to bring him into the lead by 1 endurance.

Kyle recruited Deadshot, Dead Aim on turn 2, while Adam had no recruit. Kyle attacked Adam directly with Deadshot and Fiddler and passed to Adam’s attack step. Adam attacked with Jacob Lee into Fiddler, and the score now sat with Kyle winning 46 to 44.

Adam recruited Rose Psychic in the hidden area protecting Jacob Lee, and Kyle recruited Zazzala ◊ Queen Bee, Mistress of the Hive in the hidden area protecting Deadshot, Dead Aim. Adam lost 3 endurance to Rose Psychic at the start of the combat phase and then declared Rose into Fiddler, and then Jacob Lee directly. Kyle attacked back during his attack step with Queen Bee and Deadshot directly. After Adam gained 6 endurance back at the start of the recovery phase, the endurance totals were tied at 39.

On turn 4, Kyle recruited Ragdoll in the front row, while Adam recruited Arthur Kendrick visible in the support row. Adam took 3 endurance again from Rose Psychic as Kyle thought over his attacks for the turn. Kyle declared Ragdoll into Arthur Kendrick, and Adam responded with Secret Checkmate HQ to give Arthur +2 ATK. Both players stunned their characters, with Adam taking 5 endurance loss to Kyle’s 4. Kyle chose to use Ragdoll’s vengeance, discarding a copy of Fatality, Flawless Victory so that Ragdoll would recover at the start of the recovery phase. Adam chastised himself as he flipped Checkmate Safe House to team-up Shadowpact and Checkmate. He then attempted an attack with Rose Psychic into Fiddler, but Kyle KO’d Fiddler in response to return Fatality, Flawless Victory to his hand, so Adam attacked in directly instead. The score now had Adam winning just barely, 26 to 23.

Adam led off play on turn 5 with underdrops consisting of Michael Holt ◊ Mr. Terrific and Kate Spencer ◊ Manhunter. Kyle looked over the board carefully, then flipped Baddest of the Bad, returning Zazzala ◊ Queen Bee, Mistress of the Hive to his hand to search Cheshire. “Are you going to do it?” Adam asked as he shuffled Kyle’s deck. “Are you going to Victorious me right out of the game?” Kyle replied, “Yeah, I liked your article so much,” as he recruited Cheshire in the support row equipped with Laser Watch. At the start of the combat phase, Adam took another 3 endurance from Rose Psychic and then thought over his attacks for the turn. “How greedy should I be . . . as greedy as possible?” Adam asked himself as he thought about his attacks. Adam announced Jason Lee into Deadshot, Dead Aim, and both characters stunned with Adam losing 1 endurance to Kyle’s 4. Adam then declared Arthur Kendrick into Ragdoll and flipped Rann, activating it to give Arthur 6 ATK. Kyle had no responses, and the attack resolved with both characters stunning; Kyle chose to use Ragdoll’s vengeance again. Adam declared a team attack with Michael Holt and Rose Psychic into Cheshire for a total of 13 ATK (due in part to Kate Spencer ◊ Manhunter). When the attack resolved, a character on each side stunned, and Kyle lost 5 endurance to Adam’s 3. Adam then attacked directly with Kate Spencer for 3 more endurance, and the score became 16 to 7, Adam’s lead.

Kyle started off turn 6 with Alexander Luthor, Diabolical Double in the front row and then formed with all of his characters in the front row. “What should I play this turn?” Adam asked as he thought about the contents of his hand. “Nothing,” Kyle responded as Adam underdropped Roy Harper ◊ Arsenal, Knight onto the field. Adam formed with Roy Harper protecting Kate Spencer ◊ Manhunter and then passed to Kyle’s attack step. Thanks to Rose Psychic, Adam was down to 13 endurance as Kyle thought over his attacks. Kyle announced Cheshire into Roy Harper, burning Adam with Cheshire’s effect in the process. Adam responded by activating Roy Harper ◊ Arsenal, Knight and KO’ing a resource to stun Cheshire instead. Kyle responded with The Science Spire, returning Cheshire to his hand to draw five cards. “Science Spire. Must be nice,” Adam said as Kyle drew his cards. “Are you going to keep drawing? You might as well draw another five cards,” Adam added as Kyle drew his last card. Kyle discarded five cards and then declared Alexander Luthor into Roy Harper. Adam responded with Knightmare Scenario exhausting Rann; Adam then followed it up by removing The Phantom Stranger, Fallen Angel from his hand; and Kyle responded with Epic Battle so the two would reach a mutual stun. Ragdoll attacked into Kate Spencer ◊ Manhunter—bringing Adam down to an even 0—and Kyle passed his attacks. Adam attacked with Michael Holt into Ragdoll and then attacked with Rose Psychic into Kyle directly, making the score -11 to -3.

“Can you pull it out?” Adam asked as he stared at Kyle. “Nah,” Kyle responded as he extended his hand in concession.
