The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Well, folks, it’s been a blast. In my opinion, this has been one of the best tournaments in Vs. System history. On Saturday morning, Sentinels was the best deck in Golden Age and fully a quarter of the field was playing it. By the time Sunday had rolled around, though, the format had revealed itself as incredibly diverse. Seven different Tier 1 archetypes were represented in the Top 8, and any of them could have taken home the trophy. That’s not to say that skill has become less of a factor—in fact, in each of the matches played today, the player with more experience and prior success claimed victory. In the one nail-biter of the Top 8, Michael Jacob squeaked out a win vs. Adam Prosak, his evenly matched opponent. Both of those players sought their third $10K trophy as they entered this tournament, but only Michael came home with the prize. In the finals, Michael defeated Josh Wiitanen, playing another Titans deck, to secure his claim to victory. Is Avengers the new foil to Teen Titans? Will the metagame for Los Angeles be as diverse as it was in Orlando? We’ll see in a month. But for today, congratulations to Michael Jacob, the winner of $10K Orlando and Vs. System’s only three-time $10K champion!

Two of the game's best battle it out for the title!
These two competitors are giants in the Vs. world, since they each own two pieces of $10K Championship hardware.
This match pits Niles Rowland’s Squadron Supreme deck against Dorian Cuellar’s unorthodox Sentinels build.

The winner of this match makes the Top 8 and the loser doesn’t.
Both of them are 7-1, and the winner of this match has a guaranteed spot in the Top 8.
Sentinels is holding steady at about a quarter of the field, but deck variety is flourishing. I think it’s safe to say that the top tier of Golden Age has become extremely broad.
Both of these players are consistent Pro Circuit money winners with multiple Top 20 finishes under their belts.
A lot of innovation has come out of this tournament, but one of the most dynamic decks to make an appearance here today isn’t Thunderbolts or Squadron Supreme—it’s the semi-established Marvel Knights KO deck.
I held off for as long as I could, but covering one of Adam Prosak’s feature matches was an inevitability.
Doug Tice is an accomplished TCG professional who has both a first and second place $10K finish to his name. Ryeland is an up-and-coming player on the $10K circuit who made his first Top 8 in the recent $10K Atlanta.
Entering the fifth round of this tournament, two very notable players sit at the first table. Both players have four wins in four matches. “I don’t really have a shot in this matchup,” said Josh as they shuffled up.

Donald and Bulk are each extremely accomplished players. Donald has five $10K Top 8s to his name, while Bulk has one $10K Top 8 and multiple Pro Circuit Top 16 finishes.
Before the clock started, the judging staff warned the players about playing slowly (the last match went twenty-three minutes past the end of the round). “If we go to time, it’s on you,” said Joe, nodding at David.

TJ Holman’s exultations about the quality of his deck impressed me enough that I decided to feature him.

Josh is an accomplished Vs. System player with five $10K Top 8s to his name. This is Troy’s first major tournament.
Despite the early starting time, the rural location, and a monstrous traffic accident on the Florida Turnpike, we still have a room full of enthusiastic gamers.
