The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 4: Ryan Jones vs. Erik Cabanero
Anand Khare

Round 4’s top table features a match between two great players. Ryan Jones is a Pro Circuit winner, and Erik Cabanero is a consistent money finisher at both PC and $10K events. Ryan won the die roll and chose to take the odd initiatives.

Ryan kept his opener, while Erik mulliganed. Ryan had no first turn play, and Erik had Gypsy. It was Erik’s turn to have nothing on the second turn, while Ryan had Membership Drive and Captain Boomerang. Turn 3 was Ryan’s initiative, and he again had no play. Erik had something, though—an under-dropped Faith. Both players had extremely weak boards, and Ryan led the endurance race at 39–43.

Erik led off turn 4 with Kimiyo Hoshi ◊ Dr. Light in front of Faith. Ryan broke the cycle of one-sided recruiting Poison Ivy, Kiss of Death in front of Captain Boomerang. Erik attacked Dr. Light into Captain Boomerang, then attempted a team-attack with his remaining characters into Poison Ivy. He used Trial By Fire to get enough ATK, but Ryan had Bulletproof to brick-wall. Ryan used Poison Ivy to steal Faith, and that was the turn. Ryan was ahead 45–41.

On turn 5, Ryan had Zatanna in front of Faith, who was given a cosmic counter. Poison Ivy was left in front of Boomerang beside them. Erik went into the tank to consider his recruits, lamenting his situation. He eventually chose to bring out Martian Manhunter, J’onn J’onzz behind Kimiyo. Ryan sent Zatanna into Kimiyo, and he went down. Next, Ryan sent both Poison Ivy and Captain Boomerang into the Manhunter. He went down and took Poison Ivy with him. Faith attacked directly and the players moved to recovery. Ryan maintained his lead, which had widened to 42–30.

Erik’s turn 6 play was an Nth Metal-equipped Metamorpho in front of Martian Manhunter. Ryan had the devastating Gorilla Grodd, who took Faith’s place in Ryan’s formation. Faith was set next to the Gorilla, unprotected in the support row. Erik declared his first attack of the Manhunter into Poison Ivy. Before the attack was legal, Ryan predictably used Gorilla Grodd to KO Faith and steal Gypsy. He had nothing further to stop the attack, and Poison Ivy went down. Erik’s next attack brought Metamorpho into Zatanna, and Erik declined to modify Metamorpho’s ATK and DEF. Again, Ryan had nothing, and Zatanna was stunned. At the end of the turn, Ryan KO’d Zatanna. The endurance scores had evened to 30 apiece.

Ryan had the initiative on turn 7 and played Solomon Grundy, Buried on Sunday where Zatanna used to be. Erik had Wonder Woman, Princess Diana in the front row next to Metamorpho. The Manhunter was left protected by Metamorpho in the support row. Before he declared attackers, Ryan KO’d Grundy to steal Metamorpho. Gorilla Grodd crushed Martian Manhunter, and then Metamorpho took down Wonder Woman. Facing an empty board, Erik conceded.

Ryan Jones wins!
