The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 13: Jason Dawson vs. Mike Mikaelian
Mike Rosenberg

Jason Dawson made the Top 4 of the first Vs. System $10K Championship, and has since become a fixture at major events. Unfortunately for his ratings, law school is demanding more and more of his time. His progressing to Day 2 shows that he can still turn it on with the proper incentive. His opponent is Mike Mikaelian, an editor of Undefeated Magazine. Over the years he's enjoyed a number of TCGs, including Magic: The Gathering and Star Wars. His resume includes top honors at the highest levels of Star Wars competition. He’s relatively new to the Vs. System game. His gamer talents secured him a spot at today's drafting tables.

Jason won the die roll and chose to have the initiative on even turns. Mike opened with Lois Lane and grabbed an Eradicator with her recruit effect. Jason had nothing, and then nothing again on turn 2 while Mike recruited Desaad and continued to hit.

Mike faltered on turn 3, recruiting only another Lois Lane, KO'ing his first but adding another Eradicator to his hand. Jason finally found a character he could play: Mongul. Mike couldn't attack and had to watch Mongul take down Lois Lane. Both players hit their 4-drops, Jason with Metallo and Mike with Trok, a 10 ATK/6 DEF thanks to Jason's unexposed resources. He didn't stay that way for long, as Jason flipped up Revenge Pact and Warworld before sending Metallo at Trok, now at 8 ATK/6 DEF. Mike reinforced with Desaad. Next Mongul stunned Desaad, who went to the bin during the recovery phase.

Mike started turn 5 with Devilance and hid him behind Lois Lane, with Trok beside her. Jason said he had too many choices, but eventually settled on a plan of Brainiac 2.5 with everyone in the front. Trok smashed into Brainiac and stunned them both. Devilance took down Mongul costing Jason 11 endurance. Jason tried to fight back by sending Metallo at the helpless Lois Lane, but Mike had Boom Tube to rescue her. Jason lost Mongul. The score was 33 to 25 in his favor.

Jason opened turn 6 by recruiting Lex Luthor, Power Armor. Mike discarded a Team Superman character to recruit Lois Lane without paying a resource point, then recruited Kara Zor-El ◊ Supergirl. Mike left Trok and Supergirl up front, with Lois Lane behind Supergirl and Devilance behind Trok. Jason stared at the board and tried to find a good attack, then mentioned that Mike's formation had stymied him. Mike was gracious enough to apologize. Jason declared a team attack on Kara in hopes of removing her cosmic counter. After much thinking, Mike let the attack go through and removed the cosmic counter from Kara, choosing to stun Braniac. Then he let Lex take a crack at Devilance, stunning him and causing significant endurance loss thanks to Warworld.

To Jason’s dismay, Mike's turn 7 involved the recruiting Eradicator, Soul of Krypton. Jason had one of his own, but was hoping for a walk in the park. The scores stood with Jason at 20 and Mike at 16. Jason lined his men up in the support row and got ready to take Mike's best shot. Mike stunned Brainiac with Trok and Jason reinforced with Metallo. Supergirl didn't much care for that and so took a swing at him, but Jason had Boom Tube to reinforce him. Eradictor tagged Lex Luthor next. Jason flipped Men of Steel to give it +1 DEF and spare him some damage. Lex got stunned and Eradicator's effect removed him from the game. Finally Jason got a chance to swing with his Eradicator, wondering aloud “I wonder if you have another Boom Tube,” before swinging at Lois Lane. However, Mike flipped over Stopped Cold, robbing Eradicator of flight and making the attack illegal. Jason was forced to attack Supergirl, and Lois reinforced her. Jason recovered Braniac while Mike recovered Supergirl. Mike led the tight race 6 to 3.

Before they could ready for turn 8, time was called on the round. This would be the last turn of the game, one way or another. Jason recruited Mongul and Silver Banshee, then set his formation: Mongul in front of Silver Banshee and Braniac in front of the Eradicator. Mike recruited Scorn and boosted him. He set up with Scorn in front of Supergirl, and Eradicator in front of Lois Lane. Jason started the ruckus with a team attack on Eradicator using Silver Banshee, Mongul, and Brainiac 2.5. Eradicator stunned and removed Mongul, and Mike took a devastating 14 endurance loss due to Mongul’s effect. Eradicator attempted to attack Supergirl, but another Stopped Cold was aptly named. Jason had to switch over to Scorn. Jason powered-up Eradicator to 15 ATK/15 DEF. Warworld meant Mike took 12 damage from the attack, and he was left with Supergirl. He sent her against Banshee, but Jason had another Boom Tube to secure the game.

Result: Dawson def. Mikaelian
