Going into round 6, there were only four undefeated players. Two of them were from FTN. The first one isn’t overly surprising—Mike Dalton seems to have made the Pro Circuit his playground, and San Francisco is no exception. The other is possibly a little less well known for her top finishes, but very high profile as the best female player on the tournament circuit right now.
Kim Caton had to battle against name players in almost every round to get to her 6-0 record, including Billy Postlethwait, Brian Gates, and Scott Hunstad. Both she and Mike are playing the same deck—a Squadron Supreme creation named Mexican Hardware Store that’s heavy on equipment and burn. The deck continues the super-aggressive theme of Squadron Supreme and has been tweaked to fight the metagame; it features such cunning inclusions as Sage, Xavier’s Secret Weapon, which is hugely powerful against the Killing Joke deck that’s being so heavily played this weekend. Sage is fairly well represented in the San Francisco field, but she is probably at her best in this deck, where slowing things down by a turn or two is easily enough to end the game completely.
Going into the seventh round, the two powerhouse FTN players inevitably had to face off to determine who would become one of just two undefeated players. Kim Caton won with aplomb, jumping all over Dalton’s bad draw and not allowing him the time to recover.
When I asked her how it felt to be undefeated this far into Day 1, she simply said that “it’s great not to be on the bubble.” As for her feelings on the Draft format for Saturday, she calmly replied that she is a much worse Constructed player than she is a drafter.
Look out, boys—Kimberly Caton has her sights on a trophy.
