Woi Lun is the top Sealed Deck player in Malaysia. He was playing in pod 1, which included notables like Orry Suen and Benzie Dio. I hunkered down by him to see if the Malaysians had any special draft strategies.
Before the round even started, there was a major upset. One of the players failed to appear—this from the top pod on Day 2!
The judges decided to continue with the draft, and I listed all of Woi Lun's picks in order for each pack. Then, I went over his picks with him when he was done. Here’s what he said about each pick:
Pack 1:
Azrael: The choice was between this guy and Alan Scott. I expected people to draft GL and didn’t want to fight for my characters, hence I chose Azrael. There were no good plot twists in the pack.
Ultraman: I picked Ultraman out of personal preference. I really like him as the 7-drop. On hindsight, it may have been a mistake to take characters so highly. I did not expect the plot twists to dry up so fast. In Malaysia, people tend to fill out their curve first.
Millennium: I chose Millennium over the rest of the pack as I was getting ready for the second team. I didn’t expect Anti-Matter to be so under-drafted.
Frostbite: Its ability and my priority of filling out the curve made it the pick of choice. It’s really the last pack where I had to think about what to take. For the rest of the packs, I just took the best card that came to me.
Superman, Returned
Sensei
Slipstream
Space Bears
Fiero
Manhunter Guardsman
Manhunter Infiltrator
Qwardians
Manhunter Science
Manhunter Science
Pack 2:
Thunderous Onslaught: I was just waiting for this card. It is my favorite plot twist and I was hoping to get more of it.
Sinestro, Lantern in Exile: It is the 6-drop of choice. I took it over Nero, as Nero requires willpower and I’ve already got the 7-drops I need.
Woi Lun then went on to draft the following:
St’nlli
Remoni-Notra, Star Sapphire
Owlman
Nero Unleashed
Pest Control
Elasti-Man
Weaponers of Qward
Slipstream
Sector 2814
Soldiers of New Genesis
Fire Support (This late pick would later end up in Woi Lun’s main deck for want of better plot twists.)
Reciting the Oath
Pack 3:
: He made the cut for being a 5-drop, which I lack, and his cool ability to move hidden Anti-Matter characters. He has got good stats, too.
Gnaxos: I took this early as it has a cool second ability—being able to be boosted as a fifth turn play. It is also the largest 2-drop in the format.
Cosmic Conflict It is a combat modifying plot twist. I am also playing the correct affiliation to abuse it.
Ultraman
Katma Tui: Woi Lun gave priority to filling out his curve, not suspecting that he would have Power Ring in his two subsequent packs.
Power Ring
Power Ring
¡Ole!
Qwardian Watchdog
Banished to the Anti-Matter Universe
Highmaster
Henry King Jr. Brainwave
Plans Within Plans
The player who failed to show at the beginning of the draft appeared in the middle of pack 2. But it was too late, as his joining would disrupt the other players. He had to be content with playing in the PCQ.
Woi Lun picked characters highly, thinking that they would dry out quickly. However, this proved to be an error, as the rest of the pod took plot twists first. Woi Lun ended up with a deck that had a decent curve (missing only a 4-drop), but it was lacking in tricks.

He felt that his deck was below average, but hoped that his opponents would not have decks that were much better. He would need to win two games to make the Top 8.
