The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Morlocks Burn
Julia Birks

Dave is a Brisbane Yu-Gi-Oh! player who is at the top of the ladder locally in Constructed. Today, he has taken his brand-spanking-new “Anti-Meta” Morlocks Burn deck to a record of 4-2 at the end of round 6. Pretty good for a guy who’s only been playing Vs. competitively for three months!

While Dave originally switched to Vs. during The Avengers, he only started getting serious around the Marvel X-Men set. “I’m a big Marvel fan, so the X-Men clinched my participation!” We caught up to have a chat with him about the fruits of his labor, and its successes so far today.

So, Dave, tell us a bit about your deck.

It’s the “Anti-Meta” Morlocks Burn deck. I wanted to create my own deck that would combat the broad meta of Voltage and Glock and so on, hence the name. I started building it about four weeks ago, and built three different decks in the process. After a lot of refinement, thanks to the help of the other core Vs. players in Brisbane, I was able to bring the three down to this version. Technically, this build is only 2 and a half weeks old.

What’s the theme of the deck? What does it aim to do?

The concept is to try to do as much burn as possible as quickly as possible, while maintaining a solid curve. At best, it can win on turn 4. I haven’t had a turn 3 win yet, but I’m hoping I can pull it off at some point! Because it’s actually a curve deck in addition to its burn abilities, I think it has the potential to be pretty solid against the existing meta.

When I built it, I looked around and found the best Energy characters from X-Men that I could. There are a few equipments and plot twists from other sets, but it’s X-Men at the core.

What's the best card in the deck?

Bevatron saved me in the last round. I played a Doom/IG deck that made me draw a bucketload of cards. But then, on turn 5, I boosted Bevatron with six cards. This enabled me to burn my opponent for 12 points and win the game with some additional action from Flamethrower!

What's the optimal opening hand?

Usually, if I get a hand that has a 1-drop and a couple of burn plot twists and pumping equipment, it’s fine. I’ve only used my Enemy once all day!

What does it win against?

It took out a Voltage deck in round 3, on turn 4, so that was pretty good. I haven’t matched up against Glock today, so I’ll have to see how that goes.

What does it lose to?

When I play a stall deck, if I haven’t won by turn 5, that’s it. I usually can’t get the momentum back at that point.

Thanks for your time, Dave. With a start like this in Vs. System, it looks like we can expect some pretty interesting decks from you in the future. Best of luck today.
