The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

$10K Austin 2006
Metagame Staff

Squadron vs. Faces was the matchup of the day. Both semis matches were Squadron vs. Faces, feeding into a Squadron vs. Faces finals. In a turnaround from the outcome of PC Atlanta, this time Faces took home the trophy. It was piloted by none other than Doug Tice, who is quickly becoming a Vs. System legend. In case you have an exceptionally short memory, Doug took home the trophy at $10K LA a scant two weeks ago. Today makes Doug’s third $10K win, tying him with Michael Jacob for the all-time winningest $10K player.

This outcome of tournament has significance beyond its winner, though; the decks that made Top 8 are likely the last word in the MMA metagame and will define this entire PCQ season. Already, today’s PCQ has more Squadron and Faces decks than I can count . . . oh well. The next $10K will be Sealed Pack and a nice change of pace. The top Constructed minds are moving to Silver Age, which will debut in two short months. But hey, that’s something to worry about later. For now, congratulations to Doug Tice, winner of $10K Austin!

Day 2
Another all-Donkey Club finals!
“Must be nice to have the best draw in history.”
The game had somehow moved to turn 7, and it was Doug’s initiative . . .
More than anything else, this metagame represents diversity.
Day 1
Both of these players are 5-3 going into the final round; only the winner has any chance of making Top 8.
Tim Batow is one of the more recognizable names in the game, having won last year’s $10K Las Vegas. He’s also the only undefeated player left in the tournament. Kyle Dembinski is a Kansas City player who came in second at $10K Chicago.
Shane is playing the new Energy Burn deck, and that’s why I have chosen to feature him this round.
The results are in, and it’s X-Faces by a hair.
Doug Tice, the $10K LA champion, faces off against two-time PC Top 8 finisher David Spears.
The big matchups continue as Josh Wiitanen battles Gabe Walls in the third round of the tournament.
Adam Bernstein is, of course, the only player in Vs. System history to have both a PC and $10K win under his belt. Donald Noland is a store owner from Nashville who has a history of consistent performances, including six $10K Top 8s and a 27th place finish at the recent PC Atlanta.
David didn’t post a particularly spectacular performance at Atlanta, and Michael didn’t show at all, so both are looking to make their first mark on MMA today.
Eighty players have converged on Horizicon here in Austin, Texas in an attempt to take home the first $10K trophy of the new format.
