The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Deck Profile: Billy Zonos
Patrick Sullivan

PC LA is being heralded as the most open Golden Age format Vs. has seen so far. In a format as diverse as this one, there are bound to be some pretty wacky decks. One such deck that caught my eye was that of Billy Zonos, of Team Realmworx fame.

Billy explained the strategy of the deck, claiming that it’s fairly straightforward: You play your exhaust/stun characters, try to slow the game down, and eventually beat your opponent with one of your 8-drops. The ideal curve is something like turn 2 Puppet Master, turn 3 Cardiac, turn 4 Cloak, and turn 5 Rogue. This slows the game down enough to give you the time to take control. Some of the drops in the deck are metagame dependant, which explains the one Firestar (for the Australian multi-team beatdown deck among others) and the one Madame Web (an alternate drop for when you need to gain endurance). One interaction Billy explained to me was Dagger and Madame Web, which allows you to bounce and replay Dagger in order to gain endurance off of Madame Web each time.

Billy says that the rough cards for this deck are dedicated off-curve hate (such as Flame Trap, Total Anarchy, and Search and Destroy) or hate on activated abilities (Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff and Power Compressor). Any deck that relies on just attacking will find it difficult to interact with Zonos’s deck in any meaningful way. I just watched Billy play against an Avengers deck, and he had no difficulty staying ahead of his opponent the whole way, exhausting and stunning his opponent’s drops before winning on turn 9, using a boosted Professor X to steal Hercules for the win.

Whether or not Billy’s deck is a top choice for the new Golden Age remains to be seen, but one thing’s for certain—it’s one of many new and interesting builds out there in this diverse Golden Age format. Stay tuned to Metagame.com to see more decks from this exciting PC.
