The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017

While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Round 3: Daniel Tomotsugu vs. Paul Sottosanti
Ted Knutson

Daniel is a transit worker and resident of Toronto, Ontario who came down to Indianapolis for GenCon. Paul Sottosanti is a former TCG Pro and current member of R&D for a prominent TCG company. Paul (or “Future” as his friends call him) was in town for the convention and decided to borrow a deck from Antonino De Rosa to play in the 10k. He is 2-0 in the tournament thus far, despite picking up the game for the first time earlier in the weekend.

Paul is running the Sentinel deck, something relatively simple but effective for the new player, while Daniel is playing Big Brotherhood.

Game 1

Paul started the match strong, with a first turn Longshot. Two Wild Sentinels joined his army on turn 2, as Daniel played Pyro on his side. Paul continued to abuse Longshot like it was his job, revealing four cards apiece with Daniel vocally rooting against him. Daniel recruited Quicksilver, Pietro Maximoff on his turn 3, while Paul drummed up three more Wild Sentinels for his robotic army. Quicksilver attacked and bounced off a Wild Sentinel thanks to Paul’s Cover Fire.

Sentinel Mark IV joined Paul’s army on turn 4, while Daniel recruited Sabretooth, Feral Rage, putting Pyro in his front row and Sabretooth in back. Two Wild Sentinels team attacked Pyro to stun him, and a Mark IV took down Sabretooth, making the endurance totals Daniel 33, Paul 35 after the attack.

Underground Sentinel Base helped put two new Mark IVs on the board along with a Wild Sentinel, as Daniel recruited Quicksilver, Speed Demon. Sabretooth attacked a Mark IV, but another Cover Fire nullified the attack. Quicksilver beat down on a Wild Sentinel and then readied again to attack a Sentinel Mark IV. Paul shrugged, a bit embarrassed as he flipped over the third Cover Fire.

“Can I call a judge here? That’s clearly cheats. Nobody gets three Cover Fires, do they? I guess I’ll take 5 there. Do I lose now? I think I do . . .” was Daniel’s lament before scooping up his cards and sending the match to game 2.

Game 2

This game seemed like it was over before it even started, as Paul again had Longshot on his first turn. “Watch for my 3-drop . . . watch for it, watch for it!” Daniel exclaimed before flipping over a Toad, earning a groan from the crowd. The rest of the game wasn’t even close, as Daniel missed his 4-drop completely, while Paul hit every Longshot activation and rolled right through Daniel’s board.
