Day 1 Wrap-up
Gary Wise

Ladies and gentlemen . . . while you’re planning your Valentine’s Day festivities tomorrow, the greatest $10K Top 8 of all time will be duking it out for the title of $10K Columbus Champion. The honor of finishing first in the swiss goes to Gabe Walls. He is an Indiana Native and professional TCGer who you might remember from his Top 8 finish at PC Indy. Gabe worked hand in hand with Roy Harper ◊ Arsenal and the rest of the Teen Titans to finish 10-1, defeating Alex Tennet and The Brave and the Bold in round 11 to secure the honors.

Walls and Tennet are joined in the Top 8 by Rob Leander, the two-time $10K Champion who just may be the leading candidate for the title of Best Player in the World. Leander lost the final round to friendly adversary and fellow $10K juggernaut Bam Bam Rich, earning the latter a Sunday slot. They’re joined by Aaron Breider, a former TCG pro in his first major tournament, and Kyle Montgomery and Dair Grant, both of whom made the trip to Columbus with Walls.

The bracket is rounded out by Jason Hager. Hager’s final round matchup saw him paired with teammate Matt Oldaker, winner of the first-ever PCQ. Matt wanted to see Hager’s deck in the Top 8. With the two involved in a pre-tournament prize split and each already full up on PC points, it was an easy choice to let Cosmic Cop co-designer Hager play. For his trouble, Oldaker gets to sleep in, but he’ll be up relatively early to watch . . . and if you’re smart, you’ll be, too. That way, you’ll both get the early dish on what happens Sunday. Same Bat-time, same Bat-Channel.
