The Sentry™
Card# MTU-017
While his stats aren’t much bigger than those of the average 7-drop, Sentry’s “Pay ATK” power can drastically hinder an opponent’s attacking options in the late game.

Alex Brown is part of a strong contingent of Sydney players, and is known to his fellow Vs. System players as Uly. His strongest performance to date was third place at the Melbourne $10K tournament, and Alex has strong showings in his local area. He was definitely the most cheerful of the players I interviewed; actually, I don’t think I’ve ever seen him without a smile.
How does it feel travelling across the Tasman for this $10K event? Really good, I’ve only been to New Zealand once before and it’s great to be back. I love going to different places to play Vs. System and it’s so good for the game.
This event is Sealed Pack—was that a reason to make you attend? Yes, but I would have come regardless.
After three months of Marvel Knights, what’s the best draft strategy? I think Underworld is really good. You get good plot twists like Black Magic and Strength of the Grave. In the character department, you get Blade and Deathwatch. The trick is not to be conservative.
Sealed Pack is completely different from Booster Draft. What types of cards do you want to open, and what single card do you want to open? Attack pumps on the offense: Crime and Punishment, Hell’s Fury, and cards like that. If I could pick one card to open, it would be Varnae—he is a house.
Why is Vs. appealing to you? I come from a Magic background and have played a lot of that before. In Vs. System, it’s easier to track your mistakes so you can go back and learn where you went wrong. Luck also isn’t as much of a factor, so it puts more emphasis on skill.
Who’s your favorite super hero/villain? What character hasn’t been printed that you would like to see printed? Batman is my favorite. I also like heaps of the characters in the Avengers, and that is coming out in three months’ time. I can’t think of anything else.
Do you pretend to be the super hero or villain when you play? Do you make gestures and sound effects when you play plot twists and power-ups? Sometimes . . . OPTIC BLAST! I don’t, really, but I wish I did.
To what do you attribute your Vs. success? I do a lot of reading and I practice a lot. I’m not naturally good, so it helps a lot.
Is it your circle of friends that keep you in the game? How much time do you spend on Vs. a week? Yes, if you can’t play against people you like, it’s hard to get motivation to play. I spend about 20 hours a week on Vs., most of the time reading and thinking heaps.
Is there any advice you want to hand out to the aspiring young players out there? Don’t get discouraged when you get beaten badly—just keep playing because you like it. The more you play, the better you will get, and one day you will be the one beating on someone badly.
I’d like to thank Alex for his time and wish him the best in the future.
