Semifinals: Carl Perlas vs. Gabe Walls
Josh Bennett

Walls led off with the brutal turn-one Longshot. He hit and then busted out a pair of Wild Sentinels, showing Perlas’s Toad the door. Three more Wilds followed on turn three. Perlas tried to hold the fort with Mystique and Lost City, but Combat Protocols punched through.

Perlas dropped his fourth resource and played the mighty Sabretooth before sending his Mystique into Walls’s Wild Sentinel, but he powered up four times to shut that down. Perlas was forced to Genosha into a Mystique to save via Lost City. Sabertooth cracked Longshot, but another Combat Protocols let the rest of the team take down the 11/7.

Perlas replaced Mystique with Blob, but a Mark IV had no problem busting his face. Then the rest of the team put Sabretooth on the disabled list again. Perlas’s endurance was fading fast. He tried for a big turn with Magneto, but a pair of Cover Fire’s meant he couldn’t do enough damage. Walls’s mighty Mark IV’s put him away.

Walls 1 – Perlas 0

Walls opened the game with a Wild Sentinel and then Longshot showed up late to the party. Perlas got Pyro on his side and the two started to trade damage while Walls built his hand with Longshot. He added Mystique to the mix and put them both on the front row. Walls dug with Longshot then played a second and a pair of Wild Sentinels. Mystique stepped on Longshot, and Walls’s attempt to off Pyro met an Acrobatic Dodge, forcing him to pitch three Wilds. A team attack took down Mystique. Longshot and Pyro recovered.

Walls went looking for Underground Sentinel Base and missed before bringing out a Mark IV. Again, Perlas had Sabretooth. A team attack took him down, and the last Wild powered up twice to bonk Pyro. On turn five, Quicksilver joined Perlas’s team. Walls missed again looking for the USB. He played a Mark IV and another Wild. Flying Kick let Quicksilver bust up Longshot, and brought Walls to eighteen. Then Sabretooth punked a Wild Sentinel, and Quicksilver readied himself to deal eleven more. Walls was suddenly at six.

He finally got his Base, but it looked like too little, too late. Four Mark IV’s in the front, Longshot and four Wilds in the back. Perlas put out the 6-drop Mystique, protecting Quicksilver, and sent Sabretooth to the back row.

“I’m gonna need a minute.” – Gabe Walls

“No problem man.” – Carl Perlas

While Walls did some figuring, Perlas decided he needed to Genosha for two cards

“Just to keep myself occupied.” – Carl Perlas

Finally Walls reached a decision. He activated Longshot looking for Combat Protocols and Wild Sentinel. He missed.

He flipped up Combat Protocols.

“I don’t know if I win, but lezzzzgo.” – Gabe Walls

All four Wilds charged Mystique for fourteen. Perlas flipped Lost City and powered her up. Walls pitched his last card to power up to fifteen. Perlas showed him the Avalon Space Station. Reconstruction Program got him three more pumps, but he couldn’t drop Perlas low enough.

Walls 1 – Perlas 1

Perlas couldn’t believe his opener, but with three Avalon Space Stations and a Pyro, he couldn’t send it to the bottom. Walls mulliganed but failed to find a Longshot. He opened with the traditional three Wild Sentinels. Pyro got in the way, a little.

On his third turn Walls busted out three more Wilds and put them up front. Perlas protected Pyro with Toad. Walls hit hard. The dust settled with Toad back in hand, Walls at 41 and Perlas at 36 with five Wilds. They squared off, Mark IV against Sabretooth. Flying Kick for Pyro forced a reinforce, but then Sabretooth and two flipped up New Brotherhoods did some serious damage. Walls’s team attacked back. The totals were 30-21 for Perlas.

Walls was short on action. He played a Mark IV via his USB and a Wild Sentinel. Perlas showed him Quicksilver. The Mark IV busted up Perlas’s team. 16-14 Perlas, but now he had the initiative. He recovered and made Mystique. All Walls had was another Mark IV and a Wild. His two Mark IV’s were in the back, surrounded by Wilds. Three Genosha’s later Perlas had a full hand.

He swung with Quicksilver at one of the Wild’s protecting a Mark IV. Walls put up Coverfire. They compared power-ups, but Perlas’s last facedown resource was Avalon Space Station, giving him more Quicksilvers to use. Walls just looked, and extended the hand. There was nothing he could do.
