DC Round 7: Matt Oldaker vs. Tim Batow
Ted Knutson

Tim Batow is an eighteen year-old High School student from Tulsa, Oklahoma and is currently the number one seed in the DC event. His League of Assassins deck has gone undefeated on the day so far. Tim Oldaker is one of the better Vs. players in West Virginia and has had a good run in this tournament, earning only a single loss on the day. When Matt's not playing cards, he sells insurance. Neither player ran League decks yesterday, but they have found them to be very successful thus far today.

Oldaker won the toss and took odds, starting to hit his drops on turn 2 with Bronze Tiger, as Batow played Hassim as his second-turn recruit. Each player played Ubu on turn 3, but Oldaker was able to get rid of Hassim through a series of tricks and power-ups during his attack, while managing to keep both of his men in the game.

Batow put the very strong Merlyn into play on turn 4, but Oldaker did him one better by recruiting Ra's al Ghul, Immortal Villain, nullifying Merlyn's ability. Batow responded by using Mountain Stronghold to fetch Bane, Ubu from his deck. Batow's attack shut down Ra's and Ubu both, allowing Batow to use all of his locations again. That meant he could grab the 6-drop Ra's al Ghul from his deck, signaling that he would hit both his 5- and 6-drops with aplomb. A Death in the Family meant Batow's Ubu would not be coming back, and Lazarus Pit resurrected Oldaker's doppleganger, giving Oldaker a solid turn regardless.

Oldaker seemed to pull ahead on turn 5, KO'ing Merlyn with Merlyn. He followed up with a team attack on Bane, using Lazarus Pit to make sure his guys would at least be around every other turn. Ra's al Ghul, Master Swordsman was the play for both players on turn 6, giving Oldaker four men on defense to Batow's two attackers. No men were lost in the battle, but when the dust cleared, Batow was at 24 to Oldaker's 12.

Lady Shiva, Master Assassin brought turn 7 to life, but Oldaker seemed rather surprised when Batow's competing 7-drop was Superman, False Son. The Ra's al Ghul's traded with an extra point of endurance loss pushed through for Oldaker via Flying Fortress, despite a power-up from Batow. Lady Shiva made certain that Supes left before he could become a problem, and a team attack between Bronze Tiger and Merlyn knocked Bane out of commission as well. Lazarus Pit activations kept Oldaker from actually losing any men, though Ra's Al Ghul and Ubu were going to sit out a turn, while Batow recovered Ra's and Ubu through a KO'd Lazarus Pit.

Batow added Whisper A'Daire and Bronze Tiger to his team for turn 8. Oldaker flipped over Mountain Stronghold to fetch and recruit Ra's Al Ghul, The Demon's Head, a spicy samba indeed. He re-formed his men in a T-formation with Bronze Tiger in the middle, Merlyn in the rear. Batow's Ra's bashed Lady Shiva, and then a team attack with all his men whacked big Ra's before he could get in a swing. Once Ra's was out of the way, Oldaker no longer had enough ATK on the board to even the endurance totals, so he extended his hand to Batow in concession.

Batow 1 - Oldaker 0
