Mike is sporting a 63-card construction that I can’t really make heads or tails of. He tells me that it wins with Roll Call. He’s 2-0 at this point, so I’m inclined to believe him. Incidentally, here’s a photo of one of the last turns of his last game. He won 113–37 — after paying for Captain Marvel.
Q: So where did you get the idea for this deck from?
A: Donnie Noland’s original Witching Hour deck.
Q: How exactly do you win?
A: Two ways. I can gain so much endurance that I win on endurance totals when time is called, or I can just play Captain Marvel, Champion of Magic.
Q: What role does Heralds of Galactus play in your deck?
A: It brought a lot of alternate recruit cards, allowing me to play several characters without paying a resource point. Heralds also has the Gems. Mind Gem allows me to dig through my deck. Reality Gem generates a big advantage, though, allowing me to replace team-ups where other cards can’t. It’s also great because you can use it several times in a game.
Q: Do you think that some variant of the deck might be viable in Golden Age?
A: It has the potential. Where Gone but not Forgotten was taken away, Roll Call can replace it. But there’s a lot of pump and burn in that format, so it might not be good enough.
Here’s a photo of the deck laid out on the table. I’ll have the complete decklist up later on today.
